Thanks for your concern Speedeamon, just light showers here today, and a Max temp of 15 degrees.

I would be more worried about Samiam - the shaking happened over in New Zealand, or, at least, just off the NZ coast.

They issued a warning here in Sydney that we should stay off the beaches today because the waves may get a little larger than normal - that was after the tsunami warning was cancelled. If it had turned into a tsunami, it would have hit about 10:30 last night, and nothing actually happened, at least not in my beachside suburb. :)

    Cheers Eric,
Epicentre wasn't offshore. It was inland(ish) in Fiordland.
Biggest quake since 1855 apparently, aftershocks have ranged from 6.1 to 6.4.

But we dont get all worked up about it:
"Central Southland man Warren MacPherson said 'By geez, there was a fair bit of movement'.

We're saving our excitement for the All Blacks vs Wallabies game tonight.

Perhaps that will be the case. Predicting earthquakes is pretty tricky though ;-)

Here, the geologists are saying that because of the location of the particular fault that went snap this week, we can probably expect "The Big One" soon.

    1. As if this week's 7.8 wasn't big enough.
    2. As if big earthquakes are always singular.
    3. Who knows what "soon" means to a geologist?
