Nissan EV is about to be officially announced!

    There's a pretty big thread going over in the PriusChat Forums regarding the announcement of the Nissan Leaf EV. We won't go into too much, but will give the general overview:
    • 100% Electric. No gas engine at all unlike the Prius and Volt PHEVs
    • 100 mile range on one charge.
    • Quick charge capability: can charge 80% of battery in 30 minutes.
    • Full charge takes 8 hours.
    Nissan has yet to announce a specific price, on-sale date, or anticipated production levels for the Leaf, which will be built at several factories worldwide, including in Tennessee. Jump into the discussion in the PriusChat Forums here! Nissan EV is about to be officially announced!

    Its design is not as bad as the prototype I saw in a magazine a couple of months ago... this one looks better. I see it will be produced here in the US, in Tennessee, so it may actually attract some of the hard-core supporters of America made products... good for the economy...

    Glad to see it built in the U.S., but most of the 'hard-core' buy-American guys I know would not buy it only because it is made by a foreign company.

    That's true! Those guys buy Ford not knowing that many are actually made in Mexico...

    Anyway... :focus:

    I'm not sure how much impact the EV will have against the Prius or the plug-in Prius (if it gets to the market) but I'm sure the GM folks are wondering how the Chevy Volt is going to compete with it...

    This at least looks promising. Manufacturers should "encourage" dealers to have charging stations. Usage could be incorporated into the purchase price and/or a credit card could be swiped at the station. If there were a Nissan dealer on my route that I could charge at 440V at a reasonable price I would consider taking the pit stop.

    It's not bad cause it's already on sale lol. This is the Nissan Versa (Tiida in Japan)

    That's just a "skin", it's not how the real prototype (or the production car for that matter) will look, that is, unless it's planning to release it as a Nissan Versa EV cause that's the Versa body (Tiida in Japan)

    100 miles, eh? I'll take one.
    That'll take me to and from work twice. Or my wife to work almost a week. I can use the Prius for long trips.

    This car will really raise the bar on fuel economy. So far this is the only one that have the potential to replace my Prius down in the road 3-4 years from now. Nissan has invested lots of time and money on this car and rumors are that they are planning a perfect launch with GPS guided high voltage stations for quick recharging and a very high tech interior. I mean, 100 miles? I think that is in the commute range of the vast majority of people.

    Well I guess we will find out soon in the Nissan website. The looks can't be much worse than the Prius to be honest, as much as I like my new Prius.

    This sounds good. If the Prius could run further in EV mode that might be even better. My work is only 1.3 miles away and most of what I do is within a 5 mile range (rural town) so I won't need 100 miles very often. But 100 miles of EV would make trips to the beach (~27 miles) with the family gas free quite easily- very inticing to say the least.

    Just one more thing... I can't stop myself, sorry! Unlike the Chevy Volt or plug-in Prius (some question if it will ever go into the market because the first tests were disappointing compared to the 2010 Prius), the Nissan EV will run on battery only! It is not a hybrid! The car does not have a gas engine, that's why they are claiming ZERO emissions!!! So, you really need to recharge it after those 100 miles of autonomy. Nissan is patterning with other companies (undisclosed yet) to build high-voltage charging stations all over the country, so drivers can recharge it in less than 1 hour. I think this is really the future of cars in the US, and Nissan with its EV is doing what Toyota did with its Prius 12 years ago! Nissan may be given a big step ahead of the competition to dominate the market of electric cars…

    I don't mean to rain on everyones parade. It's a great first step towards a non-fossil fuel burning mass produced automobile BUT imo, to make it more than just a speciality, niche, or novelty automobile of the rather affluent or bored, you need to double that range, make recharging stations much more convienent and visible, and get the re-charging time down to 20 minutes or less.

    Otherwise it just isn't mainstream viable for most people.

    I will watch with great interest, and enough humility to hope that I'm incorrect.

    Yes, I think you are incorrect! Nissan had thought about your questions many years ago. The best they could come up with right now is 100 miles and high-voltage charging stations, and they believe they can reach a significant part of folks with that. I'll take all my friends and working colleagues that have some sort of hybrid as an example (about 15 people!!!). The Nissan EV is a viable choice for the commute of all of them but me! That's pretty good!
