Just wondering. I have understood that the scrap value is on top of the $3500/4500 rebate. I'm picking up my 2010 IV in a couple of hours, and wondering if I should negotiate for more monies back from the scrap value of the '99 Explorer I'm turning in as part of C4C. Are salespeople giving anything more towards this? ... giving buyers a hard time if they ask? Thanks for any input.

No this is mandated BUT it depends upon weight of the vehicle. In our case $ 250 - 50 netted $ 200 against purchase price. They and you have to agree on the weight of the clunker. Also in Connecticut by the way.

Sorry to double post but before you go in to the dealer now bang out on the phone immediately what your Ford Exploder's weight translates into dollars - $ 50.

I got 4 cents per pound on a 4,012 pound DeVille, $160.48-$50. I just asked, "What did you guys come up with for my scrap value?"

    He answered without hesitation.

BTW, the car's weight is listed on WV registrations.

I got $50 in California...they said if it ended up being worth more they'd send me a check...doubt that will happen, but they said to expect one...

I got $1 from fitzgerald toyota. They made us sign some paperworks showing $100 scrap value for the car. When I complained about it, I was told by Tom (who literally shouted at me) that I'm not supposed to get anything aside from the $4500 from C4C. His exact words, "I already gave you $4500 for your clunker!". I told him it's not from him but from the government. I asked him to go to cars dot gov's website because it say's there that I'm supposed to get the scrap value on top of the rebate. But was told that he's not gonna waste his time looking at that website, because he has gone through this whole thing with his lawyer and that I'm not entitled to anything. And that he's traded in so many clunkers and I'm the only one demanding I get a scrap value. Long story short, I decided to go through with the sale, even without the scrap value, since we got the car under MSRP and bought nothing else from them. I did my financing with my credit union and got 3.65% for 60 months. note: the only reason i got $1 is because their system won't allow them to put any trade-in information if trade-in value is $0.

Wow, sounds like a great guy....haha...

I was looking at a Nissan before I bought my Prius and we were talking numbers. I was fishing for a discount and the salesman said the same thing "I'm giving you $4500 off." We argued for a minute and then I just left...

We got $200-50 - $150 scrap value without asking at Earl Stewart Toyota, North Palm beach FL.

When we reached the dealership, our price sheet was ready, I checked it and it was perfect for me sign. They also transferred tag (Less Tag fee for us) from clunker without even asking for it.

Thanks for sharing this story! I just texted it to a friend who was going to go to Fitzgerald and another Northern VA dealer this weekend for a new Camry. She replied back that Fitzgerald is now off her list. When will bad dealers learn that people talk and treating one person rudely can cost them numerous sales?

it's not a total deal breaker though 'because they're the one offering the lowest price and they only charge $99 processing fee. Processing fee in VA is around $399. We got a Prius and no dealer in VA is offering it below MSRP. I guess other dealer can give back $100-200 scrap value since they charge more in processing fee or charge higher price for the car.

Doesn't matter -- I always try to avoid shady dealers...and unfortunately, there are several out there.

I got $100 for my 92 Bronco, on top of $4500. Dealer kept $50 of the $150 scrap money.

My deal with Walnut creek CA, said no scrap value, I was the first CFC deal. They also had an ad for 3 black model III for 22,000.00 when I questioned about those they said not with CFC. The gov. site says you can get the ad price with CFC. I already got 960.00 under MSRP on the car I wanted so I didn't argue but did bring it up. They were very busy and we all went thru alot so I took the car home. What a day. I got 60.4 MPG on the trip home 114 miles.

The thing is the cash for clunkers is not supposed to be additional money for the dealers...rather an incentive to get old cars off the road. What the dealer did is illegal. Period. I would have walked. Basically, my understanding is that if you can negotiate deal A, and then add cfc, the deal needs to be A-cfc rebate, or $4500.

But, of all the cars I bought, (7) only one had no manipulation in the negotiations. My current ride (Prius from Koons Arlington) had F & I trying to get me to buy gap, even though I was putting down 4K, and also tried to hide costs by elongating the payments.

Maryland: As soon as CFC announced I found no deals below MSRP. Several dealers had only 1-3 Prius on lot white black or silver. Most would not take CFC at all. Drove 60 miles to find a red or blue w/ grey interior. Got $1.00 for scrap at MSRP price. Still happy though.

Also got yanked around by Fitzgerald - was told on Friday 8/1 that the whole program was cancelled by the government.

Got $1 at Power Toyota in Tempe, Arizona. I tried to see if they would give me more but they claimed that was all they were "allowed" to give since they said they would get nothing for it and just turn it over to the junk yard.........I doubt it. It was a 2000 Ford Windstar with great salvagable exterior parts, seats etc and some good parts under the hood ( leaky engine with 110,000 miles) .
