My Prius Review: I HATE THIS THING!

    I am impressed with the OP's highly detailed and thoughtful assessment of his wife's car. That is, until I read his comments:

    "Excessively thin tires wear out quickly. I'm on my fourth set. That averages about 35K/miles per set of tires."

    and

    "The tires on the prius are just too thin in an effort to reduce rolling resistance, and CoD. As a result, I think they wear too fast."

    This genius recognizes that the original tires are too thin and don't have long life and then proceeds to buy three more sets of the same tire? He is obviously the person George Santayana had in mind when he said "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

    A sensible person stops banging his head against the same wall when he makes the connection between that behavior and his headache.

    Yikes, I would venture to suggest that the "hate" expressed for a car, perhaps may be linked perhaps is not directly rated to the problems with the car but something else. ne could easily purchase better tires for instance. The Prius comes with a mythos that few cars come with and some times people resent this sense. Hate is such a strong word to use out a car that is easily considered one of the better cars around right now.

    Even if it is his wife's car, why keep it? Again, "hating" something like this isn't a healthy thing to have in one's heart even if it's just a car! I imagine the Prius would make a great trade-in on another auto that would make his life "easier"....

    Not to hand in my guy card, but it's my wife's car and she wants to keep it, so it stays. Given a choice based on my own scale, my lower limits are in the 4 area range (Mazda 6, Fusion, Accord, Malibu). I drive cars for long distances. And I want to sit in something I can enjoy. Even if I were forced to choose on the 1 scale (Prius) I would get a Golf TDI or Honda Fit over the Prius (if it were my choice)

    The point of this post is the VAST majority of car buyers sit in the 4, 5 range. If you add up the models and the total numbers sold, it vastly outweighs anything in the 1, 2 range. This is also a reason the family sedan market is so very competitive. There are tons of models because there are SO many buyers.

    For cars like the Prius to gain populatiry of the same numbers as a family sedan, it needs to be compared against them. And quite frankly it just falls flat in so many areas.

    So who is wrong - all the people who waited 6 months or longer a few years back, paying MSRP plus, and the 19,000 citizens who bought the prius just in July, or you? All the people who love the prius for what it is, or you who HATES it for what it isn't and never said it was?

    And what sort of person crafts such a post as yours and then drops it in the bowl of PriusChat? Here's a hint - the answer rhymes with looshrag.

    I too am concerned about our dependence on foreign oil, believe me. (See the documentary "Crude Awakening")

    But I think the new mandatory CAFE requirements are NOT the right answer. England/Europe has had tremendous success by taxing the heck out of gasoline. You give people STRONG incentive to get more fuel efficient cars, while still giving them a choice. But this is diverging from the point of this post.

    The prius is still lack luster compared to main stream vehicles.

    It seems to me that the problem is not the car, it's the fact that you have to drive your wife's car. If you had to wear her clothes, I'm sure you would resent that too.

    There is no way to design one car that will appeal to everyone. Each person has different priorities.

    I'd love to see your wife's review of her car.

    She knows. She likes it. But then again, like I said, she's an point A/B person. (And again, freely admits to this.)

    I'm hoping the GM-Volt (or possibly the Gen III Prius) will change my mind. But so far hybrids are leaving me...cold.

    My wife prefers to drive my Prius because it can get her from A to B with more fun (and comfort) than in her Xterra. Go figure!

    No it doesn't. What you are not seeing is the rest of the list. RIF. If you have a 200 lb pie and slice it up 200 ways, each piece looks small. Add them up and you have a heck of a pie. There are a TON of middle ground family cars on the market. I could sit here and probably name 50 off the top of my head.

    In terms of fuel efficient middle ground cars that are hybrids you have:
    1) Prius
    2) Civic
    3) Camry
    4) Insite
    5) Ford Fusion (Rip off BTW.)

    That's 5 models in a market filled with dozens upon dozens of non-hybrid middle ground family sedans. Therefore, by lack of choice, they automatically get a bigger section of their respective pie, making their numbers near the top look big. But the overall pie is still small. In 2006, it was 1% of ALL vehicle sales. That includes ALL Hybrids! (including Lexus, and Ford Escape, etc...)

    I find Prius fun to drive; not the "wasteful fun" (rubber burning, corner craving, etc..) but "conservative fun". My senses are widen to become aware of my surrounding including the momentum of the car to get high MPG without holding up the traffic. I feel connected to the powertrain and ultimately to the wheels. Instant response from the electric motor (though not much but noticeable) is a big help.

    I suggest you learn pulse and glide on a quiet relaxing day. Once you get a hold of it, you will get this feeling of harmony like with no other car.

    If you drive the Prius like a sports car, you won't enjoy it. The same goes for pulse and gliding in a Corvette... you won't enjoy driving it. Some TDI owners drive like grandma and claim they bought it due to the "sportiness" of it.
