Thanks for the humor. You were kidding right? I wouldn't want Toyota to turn into a Honda for example...

Yes, I was kidding. But then when you see GM trying to push the Volt as a 230 Mpg car, basic simple-minded common sense doesn't seem to apply. Can you imagine all those Chevy Volts sitting along the side of the road with their driver's sitting inside and asking themselves "but GM did say it would get 230 Mpg, didn't they?"? With technology, the devil is in the detail. I believe that it is going to be very difficult for GM to explain in simple terms to the average person exactly how the Volt will get 230 Mpg. From an image and integrity perspective, I think that GM is creating what could turn out to be a self-destructive advertising campaign. Hope I'm wrong, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Many years ago I had this required class in college entitled "American Institutions". As a young high-school graduate, I thought that this class was the biggest waste of time for any class that I was required to take for graduation. Then one day the instructor said something that has stuck in my brain and has affected my behavior towards other people ever since that time - "If you want to communicate effectively with a large number of people, keep your ideas as simple as possible and to the point".

    Sorry, I'm starting to ramble.....

    Keith :)

I'm waiting for same famous attorney to buy one, get stranded, and look at GM on a podium in front of the media and say "what part of 'miles per gallon' don't you understand? Is is the 'per gallon' part, as in the consumer puts a gallon in, and it goes 230 miles 'per gallon'? If it goes 40 miles on a charge, it then it only gets 30 miles per gallon, then it only gets 30 miles per gallon, and you have lied to your customers and deceived the public."

There were a lot of classes in college that I thought were a complete waste of time ...until the final exam was over and I looked back and realized what I had learned. I hated it at the time and it was hell, but when I look back, I am glad I took those classes.

I'd like to see 5 new hybrids come out in 2010/2011 that get 45+ mpg and the American consumers would buy. Add to that a small minivan/station wagon/crossover that gets near 40mpg. anything to get Americans into less fuel consuming cars and decrease our reliance on foreign oil

Yes, and since Toyota makes a hybrid minivan for Japan it really would not be too hard to bring it here. A hybrid minivan would sell.

Unfortunately Toyota is doing what other manufactures are doing, sell enough Prius units to keep the CAFE numbers up so you can sell the more profitable gas guzzlers ...

    Hmm . . .

If we assume that 40 kilometers includes two significant digits, then it can be stated as 25 miles. (Otherwise, we'd say there is only one significant digit, so 40 kilometers is roughly equivalent to 20 miles.)

1 gallon would be 4 liters (roughly). This would get us to about 100MPGs.

Even so, the equation (40km x (1 mile/1.609km)/(1liter x (1.0 gallons/3.785 liters) comes to 94.096 MPG -- which has to be rounded down to two significant digits (at best) or 94 MPG. (At just one significant digit, then it becomes 90 MPG.)

But, really, what is outrageously good fuel economy among friends?
