OK, so what do you get at 55 MPH without the PHEV kit?

I'm guessing about 50 mpg. Remember, I have only owned my prius about a month and have had the kit about a week.

Next test: Cold start EV City Test.

    Joanna,
You really need to do some baseline testing without the kit before your PHEV data will be useful. If you only get 50 MPG at 55 MPH, there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with your car. Your test results will then be understated. Do us all a favor. Do your 55 MPH test over again WITHOUT the PHEV kit turned on. Report those results so we can better understand your results with the PHEV kit.

Okay, if you want a baseline 55mph without the PHEV kit.. no problem. However, my EPA data mileage sheet was 48 city/51 hwy. We will see if there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with my car, or if it is just normal for the 2008 Prius.

The 2008 Prius is mechanically identical to the 2004. The EPA ratings changed in 2008 because the EPA changed thier test. Not because the 2008 performs differently than the earlier models.

While I agree that doing the same route without the PHEV will be helpful, not everyone is as skilled of a Prius driver as you krousdb. The mileage you have gotten isn't anywhere near anything I have ever seen.

There are so many variables that affect mileage:

    Tire pressure
    AC
    Windows open over 35mph

and most importantly is the drivers skill at maximizing the abilities of a Prius.

My partner gets 20% less mpg than I do on a regular basis. Prior to getting the PHEV installed I could have a nice 45mpg average going and in one trip he will drop it down to 35-37.

Since you seem to be an extremely skilled Prius driver I think you will have no problem adding 40%+ to your current MPG averages.

I'm looking forward to you getting your system installed & broken in. Your reports should be an interesting read.

    Dave,
I agree that different drivers will get different results. But in this particular case, setting the Cruise Control to 55 MPH, should not yield drastically different results.

In the mean time, I am the one enjoying:popcorn: the reports that yourself and Joanna are providing. I am only in a position to sit on the sidelines for then next week or so.

Test #5 - Cold start city EV test

Pressed reset button as soon as I started the car (cold start). Then waited for the car to charge before leaving house in EV. I think the kit is getting better with each trip. This time I got 99.9 MPG after 10 miles just like before, however, I got an additinal 11 more miles and 1 full hour of juice before it ran out. Awesome!! Okay, this kit rocks.

IMHO, Yes. You can see much better in what the Car is doing. Like you, the Hymotion does not have a user interface for the pack. There is also a Scanguage for Dummies thread over at CleanMPG. I need to go back and see if I can display fuel usage in thousands of a gallon.

So you drove for 21 miles, for one hour. So a 21 mph average? What was your MPG for the entire 21 miles?

I don't know if this is the average. This is what I noticed after this particular EV city driving trip (no highway). I was more concerned about the "cold start" test you had requested, so after I had done that, I decided to keep track of how much longer I could go on a single charge.

In the Enginer Manual it states a 10 mile EV range, but this particular trip, I exceeded that. My mpg stayed at 99.9 until about the 18th mile and then I saw the battery life start to go down. I squoze another 3 miles before the red LED light came on and the beeping balancers indicated to shut the system down.:)

Test drive #6 - 55mph baseline without using Enginer Kit

I am shocked. I guess I never drove 55 in my Prius. Before the Enginer kit, I always drove 65mph or more. I drove 55mph and took the same route as my other tests (20 miles). Guess what. I got 65.1mpg without the kit. This means the kit does help, but driving 55mph is more fuel efficient than I thought with or without the kit.:)

I am not shocked at all.:D Your car runs just fine.

Thanks for doing the baseline at 55 MPH. Now the 78MPG with PHEV is in it's proper context. It is safe to say that at 55MPH, the Enginer PHEV will provide a 20% improvement.

Bear in mind that calculating mileage improvement as (mpg2-mpg1)/mpg1 is kind of misleading. For example in the case of 65.1mpg vs. 78mpg, you could indeed travel 20% farther on the same amount of gas. However, most people are going to drive a fixed distance (per trip, per week, per year etc) and are interested in how much gas they will save. In this case you really need to compute the improvement in fuel consumption (gal/mile) rather than mpg. For the same case we now get ((1/65.1)-(1/78))/(1/65.1) = 16.5% reduction in fuel consumption.

As has been discussed in many topics, this is the reason why most of the world measures vehicle fuel consumption (litres/100km for example) instead of MPGs (or KmPGs).

Not trying to harsh on your buzz, 78mpg is still very cool!

A picture is worth 1,000 words!

I finally got the parts I needed to go from a 2kw to a 4kw system yesterday. We balanced the batteries and went for an "official" test drive with the new system in place. We drove the standard 20 miles the manual says the kit should go averaging between 25-38 mph and got 99.9 mpg (all city). We drove back home the exact same route expecting the kit to run out of juice. It didn't:D. I took a picture to show the final screen of our test drive.

    Pretty cool eh?
