Illuminated Door Sill Instructions

Here you go. I don't believe this is a violation of copyright, but if any moderators disagree, just let me know and I'll remove them.

 

Ha. I read the title of this post and though someone was installing Illuminated Instructions on the door sill and couldn't imagine a sillier modification. I now see that it is about Instructions for the Illuminated Door Sill. That make more sense.

i was wondering if i could take out the blue light and replace it with a red one.

I hope things go well with the install for these. Looking forward to seeing our car next week with these installed.

The crazy part, which to this day still can't totally figure out, is the price you pay for these in the US is just over $200. Here in Canada the price for these is $237 CDN ($218 US) plus tax. This price includes being installed by the dealer when you buy them! Inasmuch as I have watched Rick (aka HTMLSpinnr) and others document their installation which I found very interesting and for them probably most gratifying I guess having these installed for me at roughly the same price I figured why not.

If I had a bit more moibiity than I presently do and a garage to put the car in while doing this I would have loved to try it. Nothing like doing it and not blowinig yourself and others up in the process!

 

This should totally be sticky. Or at the very least, anything regarding items purchased at the PC Store should have a section (maybe it does already?? I didn't see it...)

Yes, I found this using the search feature, however -- it's just frustrating that the instructions didn't come with it and it took 10 minutes of clicking to find it.

thanks to your posted instructions.

 

Just a couple of tips when installing this:

1. Do it in a well lit area or during the day. I did it in my car port, which has little light. I added a couple of additional lights plus a flashlight. Still, it was difficult to see, especially under the dash.

2. When inserting the plates into the sill, make sure the tabs line up to the holes in the sill. Again, good lighting helps. If they aren't lined up and you push a little too hard, you can break off the alignment tabs (don't ask how I know). It's easy to install. I just wasn't paying much attention.

3. When installing the t-tabs on the driver's side, there are already a bunch of t-tabs attached to many of the wires. Thus, there isn't much wriggle room in the wires to get your fingers in there to install the t-tabs. I was being very careful not to pull out any of the wires (I don't know whether that would actually happen and didn't want to find out). On the driver's side, I pulled out the connector box (or whatever it's called), attached the t-tabs, then plugged the connector box back in. On the passenger's side, there was plenty of room, so no need to pull the connector box out.

4. There was a post which said he didn't disconnect the battery (contrary to the instructions). So, I didn't disconnect the battery. I'm not sure whether that was a good idea. I'll let someone else tell me whether I made a mistake. But I didn't encounter any problems.

5. You can take off the existing plate with your fingers, so don't purchase the plastic gizmo stated in the instructions.

6. The directions from this message board are pretty good. My biggest advice is to take your time. It isn't a race. Give yourself about an hour.

7. I guess the most important thing is to make sure you connect the t-tabs to the correct wire. The instructions give you the connector # plus the color of the wire. However, the color isn't the easiest thing to see as it is a tiny stripe on the wire. If you are color blind, you should have another person confirm the proper wire.

8. Don't take this as a bad thing, but after you install the lit plate, the light in the door looks bad. I really liked the blue light in the plate (I have a blue Prius, so the blue light looks even better). So, the white light in the door didn't look so good. I guess the next thing is to find blue lights for the door.

9. I don't know how much value you get out of this modification as it requires you to open your door in order for people to see it, and you don't want to do that while driving on the freeway. But I sure like mine.

I also didn't disconnect the battery. I did remove the fuse, which was easy, to avoid making the electrical connections on a live circuit.

 

I just put mine in. Found a set from ebay, a Toyota dealer "Toyotamall1" for $154.50 shipped. It was an easy install, didn't disconnect battery.

I agree the white light in the lower door detracts and a soft blue would be ideal. I like the sill lights...a neat hi tech look without going overboard. Wish the rears were lit too!


As a followup, I have found numerous sources on the web/ebay for blue W5W bulbs that should be a nice coordination with the sills...pretty cheap if they aren't just right though. Think I'll try, if I can remove the covers without trashing them.

 

Get the blue SMT LED style lights on Ebay - they match perfectly. The cover pops off with light attached.

Honestly, not worthy of a video, it's really easy. Pop the existing sill plates off with your thumb and fingers, put the new ones in, route the wires and connect...li'l more to it but not much. Have a look at the instructions attached elsewhere in "parts" because the pics here are better than what is actually provided with the kit. But it's not a biggie at all.

They look great - at night obviously more. Not sure worth $220+ or $300+++ at a dealer, but at $155 on ebay, it's a nice addition. But now gotta match the cool looking blue elsewhere in the cabin...without going overboard??

 

Put mine in this weekend...a couple more tips:

- Buy a couple of 1 1/4" plastic putty knives from Home Depot or similar. These have an angled edge which slide under tight fitting plastic parts and are perfect levers, no scratching either.

- The long plastic trims on the inside of the sill are not too tough to get up but when they do pop up, tilt them backwards toward the seat and push down and toward seat, there are two little clips that will pop out. Continuing to pull up is (almost) futile.

- The inside kick panels on my '11 were a total bear to pull loose, we're talking both hands pulling as hard as possible. Extremely scary. And if the plugs stay in, use needle nose pliers and just barely slide the tip into the groved flanges enough to pry them out. Putting them back in is far easier thank goodness.

- Wires are easy to pick out, but plan ahead just a bit on placement of tabs, there is not much room at all.

 

Does anyone know if you can switch out the blue door sill LED's for another colour?
