I'm starting this thread because you folks do some really interesting stuff, so your responses might give me some ideas for our next vacation. Anyway.....

We started the summer on Memorial Day in West Virginia, at the Kanawah State Forest camping and mountain biking for the weekend. The camping was great, but my wife fractured her elbow and got 6 stiches in her chin from a bike fall into a dry river bed. We wound up the weekend at the ER, but everything went rather quickly and she has now healed up nicely and is back on the bike.

The last week of June we went to Yosemite National Park for a week. I had never been, and it is beautiful!! The waterfalls were full, the hikiing was strenuous, and the scenery was picturesque. We drove up to Tioga Pass and then down to Lee Vining and had a wonderful meal at the Woo Nelly Deli, a gourmet restraurant at the Mobile Gas Station there. We did a bit of mountain biking there and in the National Forest next to the park. The giant Sequoia Trees are a don't miss thing to see.

We got back for the 4th holiday and spent it here at home in the mountains of NC. Then my cousin got married in Wilmington, NC, so we got a weekend at the beach, which was nice too, even though there were all the wedding things to do that kept interrupting our beach time.

I've just spent the last 5 days in a jury trial, and this weekend my wife went to her family's reunion. I stayed home to rest and take care of our 5 dogs. We are planning another camping trip, maybe up to Canaan Valley in West Virginia to bike and camp, or maybe to the rails 'n trails events near Ellenboro later this fall.

Just prior to the Yosemite trip, I bought a new Cannondale road bike. I've really gotten into the road cycling thing sence then. It really is a cool way to see the countryside and get in shape at the same time, especially riding up here in the mountains.

Oh, yeah, I can't forget. I also got the best mileage on a tank of gas I've ever had in the Prius this summer too. After three years, and still improving. Cool.

I hope everyone else had a great summer too' especially you guys with the new 2010 prii. I look forward to your responses

All in all, a good summer.

    RD

Our summer vacationing has mostly been sailing. We spent a long week cruising the Beaver Islands in the north end of Lake Michigan. Most of the time was at Garden Island, which is now uninhabited, but at one time it was a bustling little community. Hiking the old roads and visiting the old home sites and the Indian cemetery is always fun.

Coming back from the trip, I figured now was a good time to pump out the holding tank and refuel. So far this season we have burned eight gallons of diesel fuel, including the fuel used for domestic heating and hot water. Contrast this to the power vessel across the dock from us, which has taken on $10,000 worth of diesel on at least three occasions this summer. Yow!

Are foreign travel tips germane to this thread?

    :)

I think the next feature that should be added to PriusChat is a "Groan" button - similar to the existing "Thanks" button. Then we could have stats like "Elicited X groans in Z posts".

We drove to Reno last week. About 750 miles each way - it took us about 18 hours each way (including a two-hour nap in a rest area).
We got to put the front seats all the way down (remove head rests) to test the sleepability - that worked out okay.
With the speeds, AC usage (high 90s to 100F temps), and mountain climbing, we averaged about 47 MPG. I'm okay with that.
We stayed at the Silver Legacy hotel - got a nice deal on a corner room with a King bed for two nights. Great views. We discovered that the SL buffet is nowhere near as good as the El Dorado buffet. We also discovered that free WiFi is nearly non-existent in Reno, though you can use the WiFi when you eat/drink at Pizza Reno.
We played some table games, some slots, saw a comedy show, I fought off food poisoning*, and found a couple of nice souvenirs. DH hit a really great hand on a table game, and ended up paying for nearly the whole vacation. I hit a nice jackpot on a slot machine that covered my playing costs for the trip, too.

[*Fighting off food poisoning: If you should happen to feel queasy after eating out, within 4 to 8 hours, it may be tainted food or drink. There are a couple of things that you can do to better your odds of getting through it quickly. I used colloidal silver - DH makes it at home, and when we travel, we fill a couple of quart water bottles with a mixture of colloidal silver and water. On this trip, I had put about 4 oz of CS in each water bottle. I drank almost one whole bottle as soon as I figured out that I was ill. The queasy went away, and the rest of the problem went away within 6 hours. Another thing you can do, is eat an entire head of iceberg lettuce.
Ways to prevent food poisoning include using cayenne pepper on your food, liberally, or other hot/spicy condiments, drinking red wine with your meal, or by taking a dose of MMS after a meal. MMS might make you feel MORE queasy, however, if you did ingest some bacteria, as it will make the illness leave the quickest way possible.]
