Do you know what Honda Insight owners are talking about recently?

Insight owners are pissed because their car is 2nd rate and they couldn't afford a Prius :) Oh how I love making fun of the poor!

Right, like how much does the optional Smart Key System cost on the Insight.

Oh yeah, you CAN'T get that on an Insight :) ROI isn't based on MPG alone.

The Prius I at $21,000 is still in the same class as the Chevy Volt and the Boeing 787 -- Vaporware. Promised, but not actually available for any customer to take home.

Toyota's pre-announcement of the base model was very clearly positioning the Prius line to kneecap the Insight-II. But since then, Toyota has been unable to keep up with demand for higher profit, higher trim levels of Prius, while the Insight has been selling far below expectations, to the point of being portrayed as 'roadkill' in this forum.

Under these circumstances, I would not be at all surprised to see the base Prius fail to appear on Toyota's public schedule, or even this model year.

So, in all fairness, the MSRP difference between the cheapest available Insight and Prius now really is $2240. For some budgets and some customers, it doesn't matter that the equipment levels are not equivalent, the Insight will be the better choice.

    Yes, BUT:

Depending on the terrain, the watts used can be 'reloaded' without running the ICE more :)

Is it? I thought it was basically the same 'technical' design as the Civic Hybrid.

I guess you're just not being following the thread. There are many posts saying that the base Prius got many more features than the Base Insight, but my point was just the PRICE coparison regardless of the features.

Some here seem to take a hair-trigger shotgun approach -- kill 'em all before determining which individuals are friends and which are foes. That leads to a lot of fratricide.

The level of hostility often displayed here to owners of competing fuel efficient brands and models is disappointing. Though Prius happens to fit my particular needs better, in the absence of that competition I would have had to pay a higher price for less car.

Yeah, well, flat terrain and permanently warm weather will do that for you. Bring that sucker up here in January and see if you can scratch at 60 MPG on the interstate :)

Same answer. We went from colder than normal and rain almost every day until August. Then the lows were 70+ for 3 weeks. This week? Low 50s and I can tell. I was hanging just over 58 MPG - 500+ miles, mostly non interstate. Now I'm trying to get it back up to 57 MPG. Come January, I'll be trying to get it up to 47 MPG. Don't know how a 2010 would react but I'm sure the cold weather people will post how well the heat recirc system helps/hinders/has no effect compared to their Gen IIs when the time comes.

No, it isn't. It is a cost-reduced lower performance version of the Civic IMA. It it were the same, some hypermilers would be crushing the new Prius's highway mpgs.

Errr.. ok... so you just added the PDI to both vehicles. Whoopdeedoo. That doesn't mean his numbers are wrong. His numbers are MSRPs. Your numbers include Freight/PDI. Aren't you a little quick to jump on the numbers?

Besides, wouldn't the Prius I be closer to the LX anyway than a Prius II?

The price gap is an irrelevant point anyway. Over the last 3-4 months, I think the people have spoken on the Insight. Honda has sold what....10k of them? I'm thinking a Prius I would totally wipe the Insight off the map. Honda should have built a better Prius instead of the Insight.

Well, you do need to look at this from their perspective. The Ingight owners know that Prius owners don't have any Insight.

A note to the Insight owners reading this. I signed up at fuelly.com and my first fill-up probably won't be that great. Sat in the lot with engine running for a while with the salesman and the engine running, same when I got home when I was playing around with settings. Plus I drove a stick shift for 15 years, so I am trying to adjust my driving. :D

    Hello all!
I'm a member of this forum as I use it to research the 2010 Prius for my parents who are looking to ditch our old Sienna at some point soon. The Insight is too small for their needs, but *gasp* that's what I'm driving. I was looking at the Corolla, Civic, Yaris, and Fit, but went with the Insight. I had settled on the Fit, but then realized for about $1,000 more I could get a hybrid. Never even considered a Prius as it was out of my price range. I grew up in a "only buy a Toyota or Honda" family, and I am surprised that it is being implied in this thread that Toyotas have better reliability. From a lifetime of experience, both Hondas and Toyotas are fabulous cars!
Anyway, the point is, I cut my fuel consumption in half from my previous car. Isn't that really all that matters?
I don't feel like I'm driving a cheap car. I adore the little car. The Insight fits my needs. The Prius fits my parents needs. Ironically, they got interested in the Prius because they like my Insight!
BTW, the a/c will run at a stoplight with eco off, or depending on the weather conditions, even with eco on.
Also, my 5'10" father can easily fit in my Insight's back seat :p

I think you made a very good choice! I have nothing against the Insight, my earlier comments were tongue in cheek. I looked at the Insight briefly but ended up going with the Prius for the extra features it had. If I was younger and single, I probably would have gone with the Insight. :)
