This is directed at you guys who have been modding the exterior lights in your Prius: Have you replaced your interior lights yet with LED's? If so, what are you using?
While the owners manual has a table for the sizes and types of exterior lights, it doesnt say anything about the interiors. Mainly I'm looking to replace the Dome and driver/passenger push button lights with white LEDs.

Searching through the forums here, I found several year+ old threads about LED lighting on Gen II prius' interiors, but nothing on Gen III. I figured it must be on the radar for some of you so I thought I'd poke around for information.

The superbrightleds.com site seems to have a lot of options that would work, but I have no idea which ones would work. Help??

The ones in the front doors seem tricky to change out so I am skipping those. I plan on changing out the rear dome and the two in the front, aka the overhead lights that come on when you open a door. I did this in my last car and love the extra light. I got mine at interiorxenon.com and got one "LED Type T Style" for the rear and two "LED Type P Style" for the front. Hopefully these work and I can confirm that once they arrive.

I used superbrightleds.com for my LED replacements. For the wedge glass bulbs for the convenience (above visor), map, and door lights, I went with the WLED x4 (194/188) white bulbs. I have to say that the LEDs for the convenience lights are not quite as bright as the standard bulbs. For the dome and trunk light, I went with the LED Festoon 3022x4 bulbs. Total installation was quite easy, except for convenience locations - which required a bit more force to pop the covers off. I am quite happy with the mod.

If I'm looking at the right page on superbrightleds.com it looks like they have an x6 version of the wedge type bulbs for the convenience lights that are brighter than the x4's (12 lumen vs 7 lumen). Were those available when you ordered yours?

HIMPG, thanks for the pics and post! Any chance you could go into a little detail as to how you removed the covers for the lights to replace them? Thanks!

Jim: Yes, they were available at the time that I ordered them. I was probably being a bit optimistic in thinking that the 4 bulb LED would do the trick. I seldom use these lights though, so I am contemplating changing them out to the 6 bulb LEDs. The only issue with both is that the light beam points directly ahead. With the way the bulbs are oriented in the housing, this means the light path is horizontal (sideways) instead of vertically downwards onto the lap, whereas the regular bulb lights up 360 degrees. In the Gen II, Toyota uses a festoon bulb, which has the light path directly straight down. This type of bulb would have worked better in this situation.

Thanks much, that's very helpful. After reading your post I went out and looked at the stock convenience lights and suspected that would be the case. Since it doesn't look like there is room for some kind of right angle adapter it would be great if someone created a "sidefacing" led bulb.

    What about the:
    High Power LED Bulbs:

    For the convenience wedge bulbs...
    WLED-xHP5 Wedge Base Bulb
Miniature Wedge Base Bulb(194/168 type) with 5 High Power SMD LEDs
12 VDC, 360 Viewing Angle, Polarized bulb
    Select LED color

For the Dome and Trunk light:

    3022-xHP2

    High Power 2-LED Festoon bulb
30mm (1.2 inch long) 12 VDC Festoon Base Bulb
Wide 120 Degree Viewing Angle - Available with 2 Cool White or Warm White High Power LEDs

These have a wider beam at 120 degrees, would it solve the problem for the passenger seats?? Also would these fit right with the wings sticking out??

Or what about this guy? It'd solve the angle problem... if it fits in the area.
    WLED-WHP6-D Wedge Base Bulb
Miniature Wedge Base Lamp (194/168 type) with 6 High Power Cool White or Warm White LEDs
12 Volt AC or DC, Produces 77/55 lumen at 7000K/3100K, 120 degree beam pattern, 0.9 inch diameter
    Select Color Temp.

I'm going to have to go pry apart my prius and see I guess.

That would solve the licence plate bulb dilemma. The only question is if 120 degrees is wide enough

The big issue is having a bulb that fits the housing. That is part of the reason why I stuck with the types of LEDs that I used. I wish I took some pictures when I changed them out for documentation. If I have some time this weekend, I will do so.
As to answer your question of how to pop the covers off, you just need a flat edged wedge (flat type screwdrivers might be a bit too thick, but if you have a Swiss army knife, some of the flat tips work) to pry between the cover and the housing and pop it off. Just beware of breaking the clips that hold the cover to the housing.

I used LED's for all interior lights as well as my reverse lights. Attached are some pics.

For the personal interior lights (map lights) I used the Type P bulbs (picture showing the steering wheel is with JUST the driver's side light turned on)...also used these for the license plate bulbs and they are definitely bright enough...: Order Single Interior Xenon Bulbs

Also, beware that Type T bulbs are 1.6" long, not 1.4, so they have no chance of fitting in for the rear dome light. At least the company is sending me out a Type S Filament for free to make up for it.

For the driver's door, I used this in blue (I would think these are the BEST bulbs for the personal interior lights but get in white as they will be the brightest!): Product Listing - CAR

For the reverse lights, I used these in white (it appears the stock bulbs may be slightly brighter but in certain conditions such as rain/fog, this color may actually "penetrate" father)...LED's are on right in pictures: Product Listing - CAR

For the trunk area, I used this in cool white (these barely fit & will NOT fit as the rear dome light): Product Listing - CAR

Funny thing is I noticed after all of this that my factory LED is not working for the lower glove box. Oh well!

Thank you for posting all the links and the photos. I will be ordering some of these. I've finally finished my outside lighting (except parking lights!) and it is time to tackle interior lighting now.

Just be very gentle in replacing the personal interior light lens...mine easily broke when trying to re-attach it. One of the side of the U-shape clips broke off but thankfully my dealer is replacing it under warranty.

Hi - so bottom line, it looks good - but would you say there is more light and the light is in the correct place (map lights).

Also, what was the approximate cost???

    Great post and pics!!!!!

    TIA
