I recently found out that because I live in Oregon my hybrid battery is warranted for 10 years or 150,000 miles.

I am not a lawyer but is this pro-rated like tires or 100 % warranty.
For instance, at 145,000 miles my battery becomes defective, non-operational, do I get a new battery for free or do they say,OK you have to pay 95% of the cost and we will cover the 5%.

Its full warranty, otherwise it would be stated as pro-rated in the warranty page.

I didn't know about that. I live in Oregon too, how is it that we get a different warranty?

Is there a list of CARB states?? If memory serves me correct New York State is also on the list, but need to verify if anyone has that information. Thanks!

The CARB states are listed in the 2010 Owners Manual warranty section.

Calif is one of the CARB states but my warranty book has a footnote that the Hybrid battery is covered by the Hybrid system warranty which is 8 yr or 100,000 miles, which ever comes first.

Can someone else belong to the CARB states check the warranty book please. Thanks.

Besides the Hybrid battery, the Hybrid control module and Inverter with converter is also covered under the Hybrid System warranty for 8yr or 100,000 miles.

Generator and Motor are not footnoted under Calif Emission Control Warranty are 15yr or 150,000 miles.

Pretty sure that CARB stands for California Air Resources Board. California was the first in establishing higher than nationwide limits in a great number of environmental areas.

Can someone verify that for 2010, the Hybrid Battery is only warrant at 8 yr or 100,000 miles for Calif or other CARB states. I don't think that the 10 years/150,000 miles warranty is there anymore.

    Thanks

CARB's PZEV moniker requires 150k mile emissions warranty. Toyota's warranty blurb says the traction battery warranty varies according to applicable federal or california emissions requirements, which makes me think that at least CA, and maybe all the CARB compliant states, have a 10year/150K mile traction battery warranty.

My state may have become CARB compliant after I bought my car. I wonder if I still benefit from a longer warrany that any CARB compliant state adheres to now.

Addendum: I found a prelim Toyota sourced 2010 Prius spec sheet that confirms 10y/150k warranty for the traction battery for the CARB states. The wording leaves me unsure about everybody else.

The spec sheet is a prelimary information. As I stated is my earlier posting, my 2010 warranty book has a footnote which stated that the Hybrid Battery is not the 10yr/150K warranty. Thanks.

    SilverPriusIII,

Here is a press release dated 3/09 that is still up on the Toyota website. It says that in CA and 8 other CARB compliant states, the traction battery is warranted for 10y/150k miles, while the other hybrid components are 15y/150k miles. Oddly enough, it does not list OR or WA as CARB compliant states. I don't know why.

Thanks. This is what I see when I click on your link ...

    Peace of Mind Warranty Protection

Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against corrosion with no mileage limitation. The hybrid-related components, including the HV battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are covered for eight years/100,000 miles. In applicable states (including Calif., Mass., N.Y, N.J., Vt., Conn., Maine, N.M., and R.I.) hybrid-related component coverage is 15 years/150,000 miles with the exception of the hybrid battery which is warranted for 10 years/ 150,000 miles.

Note : The last line with the exception of the hybrid battery

I think this may be a typo on their press release. Why would it said with the exception of the hybrid battery if the battery is the same as other hybrid-related component covered for 15 yr/ 150,000 miles for Calif.

I think I will print that out since this is not the same as my warranty book.

I don't really understand your confusion, but I have not seen the 2010 warranty booklet. The Toyota blurb seems to be saying this:

    CARB state

    • Traction battery: 10y/150k miles
    • Other hybrid components: 15y/150k miles

    Non CARB state

    • Traction battery: 8y/100k miles
    • Other hybrid components: 8y/100k miles

It should be understood that the warranty is not prorated, but expires at the first condition met. So e.g., a 16 year old car with 10k on the odometer is past all warranties, as would be a one year old car with 151k miles on the odometer.

Page 11 footnote 1 of the Warranty & Maintenance Guide booklet lists about 10 states, including Oregon, which get the 10 year/150K mile warranty on the hybrid battery. As alfon stated it is because we have adopted the CARB regulations. Some of your tax dollars working for you for a change. :)

    Thanks SageBrush and Tumbleweed.

I have misread the Warranty and Maintenance Guide. I got confused by Pennsylvania and Washington vehicles equipped with Calif. Certified Emission control Warranty.

    Thanks again.

I was near the Toyota dealer, and so went in to read the warranty booklet. The big easy to read tables only mention 8yr/80k, but a footnote (on page 18 I think or thereabouts) does indeed note that CARB states have the longer warranties as I noted above. This probably will not surprise anybody, but the two salesmen I talked to were adamant -- and wrong. The guy who brought me the booklet to read was generous enough to be happy that he could give his salespeople a better pitch. Neither of them had the faintest idea what CARB is, let alone that NM is compliant.

So with that introduction to salesperson ignorance ... I was surprised to hear two factoids from him: 1, that a total of 15 traction batteries have failed in the past 10 years (which I think is ballpark correct), and 2, that a G3 Prius traction battery replacement is $800. That is quite a bit lower than the $2k or so I have seen posted here for hte G2 Prius here on PC. Can anybody confirm this is true ?
