It seems to me that the Gen II I was driving had some sort of lining to the top of the glove box that kept things from sliding around and rattling. I was disappointed to see that the box in my new car is just plain ol' plastic. Did I imagine the liner, or was it some sort of custom thing, or did Toyota decide against it in the Gen III's?

There are no liners standard on the Gen III, but there is a nice, reasonably inexpensive aftermarket option available. Discussed in this thread:

I picked up some felt with glue on the back and lined both of them.

Thanks! Silly me... I did a search for "glove box" and "liners"

I'm still unclear however, was this something Toyota did at one point? It seems to me the liner in the box of the Gen II was very much like the liner in the sunglass holder of my Gen III.

    Thank you.

I purchased the felt with the adhesive back from Joann Fabrics. They are like a little Home Depot for fabrics. I am not sure if they are in every city or not.
I used paper to create templates then cut on the felt. It took less then 2 hours create felt for the entire car. I did the center console also.

I looked at Joanne for this and they just had funky colors it seemed. I have bisque interior and would prefer a beige or such. Need to go back and double-check and ask the clerks. I'm a guy, and always feel funny going into a store like that. Probably a good place to pick up gals though.

Man that's a nice job you did on yours....

BTW do you hem slacks as well?

The console pads that Wilson makes (linked up higher in this thread) are awesome. Very grippy and more padded than felt. I'm not knocking Judgeless' felt job (it looks great) -- I'm just saying there's another alternative out there if you're not a do-it-yourself type.

I could not find the commercial glove box liner you mentioned.
I both "Googled" and "Binged" it and nothing appropriate came up.
If you can, can you please give more info for locating the liner.
    Thanks.

You did not imagine the liner.

Like the Gen III, the Gen II had two glove boxes, an upper and a lower.

    A. The Gen II's upper glove box had two shelves:

-- The small top shelf was not lined; it just had plain old hard slippery plastic.

-- The large bottom shelf was lined with a sticky neoprene insert. This is probably the liner you remember.

    B. The Gen II's lower glove box was lined in fuzzy velor or felt type fabric, similar to what Mitchellsprius did himself to his Gen III glove boxes. The lower glove box also had a hidden compartment or slot in the back of it that held the Owner's Manual and other car documentation perfectly.

I too highly recommend getting the neoprene liners / console pads aka "Non-Slip Pads" from Wilson on eBay. They'll stop things from sliding or rattling around in all your Gen III's compartments, including the cupholders.

I hadn't previously noticed all of the differences. I just went and borrowed the liner out of my friends car to see if it would fit in my car. It does not. The compartments on the Gen II are much roomier, and more customized. Why did they do away with all the nice luxy touches? I didn't realize that the liner would come out either. Now that I have it in my hands, it feels like rubber. I will order a set from the fella on ebay.

    Thanks!

Michaels and Hobby Lobby have adhesive-backed felt in a great many colors.
