I have some Fiesta plates that have some orange paint on them that is slightly radioactive. I make my in-laws eat off them (kidding)

It actually takes specially trained personnel, with equipment that is generally NOT available to the public and/or is cost prohibitive, to detect neutron and gamma sources that *might* indicate a dirty bomb, or the Real Thing

A small black box, that goes "beep?" Not likely

As far as elevated background sources, anybody who works with cement will have elevated levels. Portland cement is a natural source of background radiation

As the good doctor pointed out, if a person had enough radiation to set off a Geiger counter say 10 metres away, that person would no longer be alive

True, but most detectors contain electronics, which *do* have something to do with electromagnetic frequencies and EMF. It is entirely possible that the detector was responding to an induced signal.

The ones I've had experience with, from EG&G, are specifically designed to be shielded from and not respond to EMI/EMP

Though I wouldn't expect a police dept to have access to a +$100,000 piece of equipment like that

Was going to post saying how we the tax payers paid 100k's for those things but decided to google first. Guess what!

Homeland Security Gives NYPD Radiation Detectors : Homeland Security News

The 450,000-dollar worth Advanced Spectroscopic Portal Monitors will be placed in three SUVs

Recently, the department had also purchased 8,000 Dosimeters, pager-sized detectors to be given to police if there is a nuclear attack.
Outfitted in protective gear, officers would use the Dosimeters to find “hot spots” of radiation.

Maybe the cops were standing by a sewer grate and it was radon gas seeping through it that was setting off the meter. :p

I know it was that plasmacluster ionizing air filter thingy right? Or was that just with the ATP?

The guy with the bomb crawling thru the sewer.

The Doctors at the VA finally checked me...

I'm not "hot". In a good way! They were going to put me on the "camera"... but they didnt detect anything on me at the time of my visit. It did detect patients that received treatment about 1-2 rooms down and through the walls.

They suspect the cops had their detectors at the lowest setting and it was detecting ambient radiation.

However, I will need to take further testing with uranium tests and blood tests because I still may have been exposed but was never tested during my active duty.

I just want to thank everyone for their knowledge and humor regarding this issue. and Again, I only mentioned this matter in priusChat because I was in my Prius and I know we have a good group of people here.

Yes, depending on what scale you use, you can get an "alarming" reading, when it really is normal
