Disengaging the automatic unlocking

    Is there any way of disengaging the auto unlocking when you are within 1 metre of the car?
    If the key fob was wrapped in foil (metal), would that work?

    The car doesn't unlock just because you get the fob near the car. You have to touch a door handle (or the rear hatch in a 3-door SKS setup).

    Wrapping a fob in foil will prevent the fob from functioning completely.

    JayMan2 is absolutely correct. You can walk all you want near the car with the fob in hand/pocket/purse and it won't unlock by itself "unless" you touch the door handle.

    As stated, the doors shouldn't unlock unless you have the key fob near the vehicle AND you touch or gasp the door handle.

    But if you wish to disable the SKS (smart key system), here are the instructions I found with a search of this forum:

    If you read page 587 of the manual you'll see that the SKS off is a dealer-customizable function.

    EDIT: I haven't tried it, but bluemonday points to a thread below that seems to confirm that the procedure works on a 2010 Prius.

    I can't attest to it, but the guy in post 45 here says it works.

    This is what you do in a Gen III instead of using the button that is used in a Gen II. Again, according to posts here, I haven't tried it yet.

    I understand this. But if I leave the keyfob hidden somewhere on the car (such as in the front bumper, rear bumper, in the tailpipe, etc), someone can still open the car. However maybe if it was left in the tailpipe, the metal of the tailpipe would stop the radio signal. That said, you have more chance of seeing the keyfob in the tailpipe & when you try to get it out, you may knock it further inside!!

    Hide the key somewhere on the car for some else to find & then drive

    As far as I know the car will open when the key fob is in the vicinity however it will not start unless the key fob is inside the car.

    Try it, it works...

    Problem sorted - wrapping the key fob in foil blocks the radio signal :)

    I won't post that I told you so. :p But it seems your aim was to be able to hide a fob in/on the car, correct, and not really anything to do with the thread title?

    I guess it's going to have to be outside the car. Hiding the fob IN the car and disabling the automatic unlocking won't be very useful because the other person won't be able to get to it!
