    Cats, cats, cats!

I have 5 indoor cats _ so I was wondering, do I get 5 votes?

...and then there's the outdoor family of 3 tame strays; Colonel (the Dad) and 2 sons, Midnight and Twinkle. Star was their sister who we brought inside last fall. It's a pretty scary world outdoors sometimes... raccoons, possums, and skunks, oh my!

Actually, I'm pretty much one of those compassionate animal lovers... but the easy part about cats is that you can go away overnight or for a few days and they pretty much take care of themselves. Dogs, well, they need that daily walk or two!

Anyhow, in honor of the dog, the cat, and the rat _ this guy makes it look sooooo easy to get along. :D LOL!

    Great video!

To the question, "If they can get along, why can't people get along?" I would answer: Because animals are smarter than people!

I prefer cats because they are more independent and more discerning. However, I am allergic to them. I like dogs, too, especially the little ones, such as yorkshire terriers, that look like little teddy bears. I don't like ones that jump on you and lick your face ... or little wiener dogs like the ones next door that not only bark at you but also BITE.

This is a matter of training. Most people are too stupid or too lazy to train their dogs properly. My cousin's three dogs don't jump on you unless you tell them to (say "up" and they'll be in your lap in an instant) and they don't bark unless someone approaches the house (because my cousin wants them to bark in that case).

I like dogs a lot more since visiting my cousin, and seeing how nice well-behaved dogs can be. Of course, the advantage of cats is that you don't have to train them. My kitty was born outside, on a farm. The day I brought him home I showed him the litter box, and he used it faithfully for the rest of his life.

The other side of the coin is that you can't train them. Sure, they'll poop in the litter box, but sit, stay, and bark (OK, meow) twice for showing two fingers is utterly beyond them. I used to think cats were smarter than dogs because they refused to chase a stick. Now that I have a smart dog, I know better.

You can train cats, but only to do something that they naturally want to do. For example, my cat is trained to reach up and touch a door knob if she wants the door open. Likewise she responds to hand signals for jumping onto my lap. These were both things that she showed a natural tendency to do. All I did was provide reinforcement for that behavior. Getting her to do something new and novel would be hard or impossible.

Like jumping through a flaming hoop??? Cats can be trained, and many circuses have trained (big) cats. I once met a guy who had been a cat trainer in a circus, and he said he could train a house cat to do anything a tiger can be trained to do. Lions have a different temperament, but tigers and house cats are nearly identical, except for their size.

The difference is that by and large, a dog is a toadie who lives to please his master, while a cat considers himself to be the master. The smarter the animal, the harder it is to make it bend to your will. Most animals can learn to tricks easily. Training is 1% teaching a trick, and 99% imposing your will on the animal to make it do what you want it to, rather than what it wants to do.

Again, dogs, by their nature, want to please you. Cats couldn't care less. It's a matter of temperament, not intelligence. Most animals are smarter than people anyway: They are not the ones working day and night to make the Earth uninhabitable.

I like the way that cats just look at you, like, "You want me to do WHAT?" and then they do exactly what they were going to do anyway.

.....aahhh _ all the dog people seem to be underestimating the greatness of the cat. (... and even some of the cat people :( ).

I think whether you're a dog person or a cat person depends on whether you want an independent companion who thinks for himself/herself, or a sycophant who kisses up to you and always says "Yes, master!"

I'd argue that there are a relatively huge number of people:people relationships where they "get along" than there are cat:rodent relationships that end in anything but death of one party.

I'm impressed. You can teach an old cat new tricks. :)

Anything alive has the potential to be "trained"...

I agree Bra... but what happened to teh Kitties before they were soooo good at teh Circus...

As someone that HAS trained more than one animal... as I'm looking at the flic and I know why the cats are doing the tricks... they are hungry.

Food deprivation, then food reward... it's obvious the cats are getting a food reward for some of the stuff. Nice little act though.

That's the PETA take, and I don't think in this case they are incorrect...

My take is... WTH... it's a fricken cat... I had cat on a stick in Asia... puppy too, but that's a different story... and I'm sure the pet loving folks that are in here will be unhappy that someone somewhere eats the animal they own... but that is the point right... if you own it... you can...

    Pet it...

    :D

True. But on the other hand, cats and mice do not drop bombs on each other from airplanes, or nuke entire cities.

I have the sneaking suspicion that the voice-over was added later, to a video of an erratic dog.

    Yes, I'm a cynic.
