    Re: Prius Recall ('04 - '09)

I also said "or press the power button" (in the case of a non-hybrid, substitute "turn off the key"). When I was in my '20's I was driving a 455 Olds powered Corvair on a city street. Floored the throttle and the throttle spring broke. Full throttle, traffic looming. The first thing I did was turn off the key. I drove it back by switching the key off and on. It didn't take a lot of thought, but I admit I didn't panic just because the car wasn't doing what I expected (which is what most people will do, most likely).

As for flames coming from the front brakes, if you wait until the speed is above 80 or 90 there is no chance of getting the brakes to overcome both inertia and the engine. However, stomp the brake early in the process and it WILL stop (many tests have proven this).

There is no panic-proof car. But don't blame the car or the manufacturer for panicing.

    Re: Prius Recall ('04 - '09)

Wrong. There are crashes and deaths over this issue.

I just watched the news and I and saw I admit a very sensationalist report. They had a 911 call from a driver who was calling for help from a Lexus going 120mph and can not stop. He was not a dummy who could not find the gas pedal, he was a police officer. He and three other family members were killed. It was pretty hard to listen to his call knowing that he died.

You can say its a different car but apparently the floor mat problem is the same across models.

Not to negate the seriousness of the issue for those affected, but c'mon, Toyota. You won't fix the obvious defect with the windshield cowling that cost me $400 to replace plugs and coils, you won't fix the faulty traction control that makes the car dangerous in Winter, yet you do a global recall on floor mats because people don't always clip them back in. Oh, what a feeling. :(

Not exactly. The mat was one that Toyota/Lexus dealers regularly install. If there are many mats installed by dealers that can KILL people there needs to be recall. That does not mean its Toyota's fault but that is irrelevant, the recall needs to happen.

    102 incidents have possibly happened.

Wasn't a Toyota floormat. And if he couldn't figure out what was causing his trouble, shift to Neutral, or otherwise disable his vehicle, then yes, the officer was from the shallow end of the gene pool.

I'm one of the few who took delivery of their 2010 Prius without the floor hooks holding down the mat. I called the dealer and came back on Saturday to get the hooks and put them in myself:

Personally, I think the floor hooks are a little 'cheesy' but 'adequate.' I know mine are in right and it takes considerable force to get the mats to move, now. But I can well imagine another ... less anal-retentive individual ... doing the job wrong. It takes determination and strength to do it right and it would be too easy for someone to not properly fasten the hooks and floor mat.

Please don't go off and "set your hair on fire!" Just next time you go to get in the driver side, reach down and grab the floor mat and give it a tug. Done properly, it should be pretty snug to the floor and not give. If the 'hook' part is loose, visit your friendly Toyota Service Center and in the nicest way ask them to fix it.

    Re: Prius Recall ('04 - '09)

My OEM Prius floormat is clipped in place. pic shows 1.5" clearance from bottom of aftermarket pedal pad to floormat and about same on left side. I guess we better do what Toyota says so as to not get into a legal stink if an accident occured due to stuck pedal.

    IM002518.jpg

btw, the gas pedal pad was added to sort of even out the reach to gas and brake pedal. I don't like the gas pedal 'way down there', brake pedal 'real, real close', then have to scrunch my leg up to use the brake pedal. More likely to over-apply the brake if it's too close.

Oh brother, the recall is on the 04 - 09 Prius, then news shows multi-pics of 2010 Prius and calls it out by name as one of the effected recall vehicles. Lame.

    Re: Prius Recall ('04 - '09)

My '09 has a slotted/looking peg sticking up from the floor and you put the OEM mat (which has a hole in it) over the corresponding peg. There is no way that this mat will move around.
I've noticed other threads mentioning mats that a dealer gave them that didn't have the hole, hence not proper ones, maybe this may be the case in some instances, or aftermarket mats.
I've owned numerous cars (as I'm sure you have too) with the hole in the mat that fits over the peg and believe me------those mats don't move, certainly not up under the gas pedal.
Even the aftermarket mats shouldn't move if you put the pins in them to hold them in place------------------aaay, there's the rub....
    (as the Prius Pirate says).

    Re: Prius Recall ('04 - '09)

why is the 2010 prius not included-does it mean the floor mat problem was fixed in 2010 prius? I don't think so. More like, Toyota does not want to reduce the demand for this model. I am sure they will recall after a year

My old floor mats are scummed up from all the slop from winter boots (and cleaning them has not worked). So I want new ones. You think Toyota would give me some new, non-crash causing?

<sigh> and you wonder why Toyota is so uptight and has the owner's manual written by a lawyer.. it's because of people like those that don't follow instructions and place the mat with the hooks holding it in place.

My 2010 all-weather mats has a disclaimer now about not putting it on top of the carpet mats.

So far, it works fine. I don't know how thick other mats are but I thought the Canadian ones are quite thick. The hooks are long enough to hold both in place. I don't know if they have the strength to hold both in place but given that neither the Camry nor the '05 Prius has had the driver's all-weather mat unhook itself, I think it's fairly safe. I still question how those 100 or so people manage to get the mats unhooked. Maybe they were sloppy with their installation.

it was an exact mat. one that is clear plastic. its wet a lot so, me being the lazy type, in wet season, i toss the plastic mat ON TOP of the Toyota mat. when dry season comes, remove plastic mat.

worked for me for most of 2 years. not recommended though

I've had my mats bunch up, or move up and lay on the accelerator. I hope I get some new mats :)

My 2006 has hooks, too. Actually, I think this might be about the rubber mats that people put over their fabric mats.
