A friend of mine recently purchased a portable Nav for his car so we were talking about the technology when he asked me how many POI the Toyota OEM Nav has in the database...

For the life of me, I cannot find this information, and Toyota does not seem to advertise it. I have an '06 with the DVD v5.1, if that is a factor.

    Does anyone know?

    Thanks!

I wouldn't necessary assume portables lack POI database size anymore, since many portables now use flash memory (that I imagine can exceed the size of a DVD), they should be able to approach (or surpass) the built-in units that are DVD-based.

My father recently got a Garmin StreePilot c330 - which is a fairly entry-level unit around C$400 - that contains all maps for USA & Canada pre-loaded, with 5 million POI. That's pretty decent! Very nice little unit, too.

Of course, there are also other benefits to OEM besides POI database size...

Well I got the TomTom ONE with a 1GB SD Card and USA/Canada pre-loaded. That's only ¼ the size of a DVD. This one is Cdn$500.

The C330 is on sale everywhere. I hope your dad got a discount. If not, see if you can get it within the price-protection guarantee period.

I have one NA database for the MIO that has is said to have 12 million POI.
And, it has "all" (complete coverage) the roads in the USA and most in Canada, and can route from LA to NYC.
Except for one foot of road lacking in northern Canada, it can route from LA to Fairbanks.
All in under 4 GB flash SD card, with room for some movies.

The ver 8.1 DVD is about 7.5 GB on a Dual-Layer DVD.
But, still without anything close to full coverage.
No idea of number of POI.

The Lexus site has some information on the current editions. The software is the same for all the Toyota lines.

The current edition has 8.8 million POIs.

I came across those release notes recently, and it is great information to have, as you have a better idea whether your area has enough updates to be worth putting out the cash! I do find it surprising that the POI count did not increase at all from one update to the next.

My question is, does anyone happen to have the release notes for v8.1? As of now, I am still using v7.1, and I am wondering how many changes there were from 7.1 to 8.1, since I now know what has changed from 8.1 to 9.1.

Why doesn't Toyota make these documents more widely available?

    Thanks...
