Is it $245 shipped? and which website did you get it from? I think my dealership told me it cost something like $90 to get it installed.

I got mine from metrotpn.com. If u trust them with your car I would jump at a $90 install since the dealer charged me $54 just to activate it. It's not a trivial install. You have to take off a number of trim pieces, mount the glass breakage sensor & install the harness which includes inserting a pin in a connector.

It is funny that the VIP RS3200 Plus is no longer an option to get with car no more. (at least that is the case in Texas) I found out about it when they told me I am getting my car the end of this month and I asked to get the VIP R3200 as an option. They told me they don't see it in the system as one of the option I can pick to get the port to install it. So I told them how much will it cost to get it install. I am sure it will be more expensive if I get the parts from the dealership so I didn't even bother to ask them how much the part will cost me. I only ask them how much will it cost for me to get it install , and they told me it will take two labor hrs and each hr will cost $109. Which I am looking for $218 plus tax. So I think I will install it myself and get them activate it for $50 something.

I was reading the pdf file. It talked about the Hood Switch or without the Hood Switch. Does the Prius III in the USA got the hood switch or not?

You talked about the glass breakage sensor that I have to install. Do I have to install them in each door? I don't see it talked about it in the PDF file.

My dealer wanted $650 to put the VIP RS3200 Plus Security System in my Prius. I asked if they were kidding. They weren't.

There's only one. It's a little box in the middle of the dashboard somewhere with a microphone... it 'listens' for the sound of glass breaking. I believe the microphone is actually in the little indicator panel that goes in the switch area to the left of the steering wheel.

The glass Breakage Electronics (a little bigger than a deck of cards) mounts under the dash just the right and maybe a foot above the 4 switches that include the dash light dimmer. There is a wire that runs from the glass breakage electronics to a unit that fits in the knock-out just to the right of the dash dimmer switch. This unit has a small mic and a red LED that turns on for the 30 seconds the VIP system takes to arm. It then turns off and there is an icon near the high beam indicator and cruise control icons that flashes on and off. It took me a while to figure out exactly where the glass breakage electronics mounted since it differs between a IV and a V and the directions were not that clear. The pin location is very clear but a bit of a time to pull the connectors since they lock in. The harness connects between connectors in an existing harness that is behind the left kick panel. Again because this varies between a IV and a V the directions could be clearer but I got it right the first time. The last issue is that you won't know if anything is done right until the dealer enables it so I was really nervous I would be wasting the $54 they charge to enable it.

Thank you for the information, but I got one more question. You mention about IV and a V. Do you mean the Version of the VIP RS3200 or Prius IV and V? because the car I am going to install the VIP RS3200 is a Prius III.

My dealer had a chart, I am not sure was it Toyota issue or a chart my dealer made for themself. But it said the alarm will takes two hrs of labor, and that is where I got the number from.

I think there is only one version of the VIP. I was talking about a Prius IV vs V. There are special instructions for IV and V and for just V that I assume you can ignore if you have a III. The instructions aren't terrible clear. They refer to things like V5/V4 Add On, RES ECU, GBS ECU, V5 Only and as far as I could find no glossary. I suspect the RES and GBS are part of the V Advanced Package.

RES is Remote Engine Start. V4 is the designation for the RES and V5 is the designation for the security system, GBS. The instructions are indicating procedures when both of these options are installed. If they are both being installed the mounts connect together and the wiring harnesses will daisy chain into the main harness. You would see similar steps in the RES installation instructions. It has nothing to do with Prius model numbers.

Thank you. Knowing that during the install would have been helpful.

Today I went to Sterling Mccall Toyota in Houston to ask how much will they charge me to activate the alarm. They said they don't just charge to activate it. They will charge the whole installation fee for two hrs of work, even if I install it myself. They are trying to charge me $200 something for 5 mins of work? What kind of dealership is that? Anyone from Houston, if you read this and trying to do some research before getting the car, then don't buy your car from them. They will rip you off soon or later!!!

I just finished the installation of my alarm and it does takes around 1.5 hrs to finish. Going to get my Mongoose cable around Oct 29th and will activate it myself plus getting my customize setting done. Thanks for the instruction PDF files plus all the other information. I will sell the Mongoose MFC cable for $400 once I am done, so if anyone interested to get the cable from me, then let me know by PM.

Can you rate the difficulty of installing the alarm? from 1 to 5. After installng it, did you have to take to dealer to activate it.

I am thinking of purchasing it for my 2012.

    thank you in earnest.

Just had the VIP 3200 installed on my 2012 Gen III four. Service Manager told me there was no owners manual. So I was given nothing about the alarm or if there was any user options that I could change. Are there any options that can be set. Can the alarm be made to arm after the last door is shut without remote or touching the door (passive arming).

Update 4/9/12 Called service manager and they found the owner manual. now trying to activate teh passive mode. starts out saying insert and remove key 3 times. no key on a smart key car. Has any one had luck setting the passive arming mode?

Update 6/13/2012 Toyota finally stated that the VIP RS3200 alarm last updated in 2005 does not work with any cars using smart key. The owners manual states it has a passive options but this option again doesn't work with cars with the smart key. For my trouble Toyota gave me $100. Below is my answer from Mother Toyota.

    Dear Mr. Burns,

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

Your feedback to Toyota about the 2012 Prius is greatly appreciated and we apologize for your dissatisfaction that the passive option will not work with the smart key system.

We appreciate your feedback because the only way we know what our customers are looking for is when they tell us, as you have. We try to scope our customers out in advance, by researching the market, conducting interviews, surveys, focus groups and doing our homework, but there's no better source than a 2012 Prius owner or intender who takes the time to tell us like it is.

We can't guarantee that a future change would be made, but if it were, it would be driven by just this sort of honest communication.

Again, please accept our apologies for your disappointment and our sincere thanks for taking the time and trouble to let us know.

Your email has been documented at our National Headquarters under file#1206080163. If we may be of further assistance, please contact us via email or by calling 800-331-4331. We are available from 5 AM to 6 PM, Pacific Time, Monday through Friday, and from 7 AM to 4 PM Saturday.

I assume that this letter means that the passive doesn't work but the rest does. Or does this not work at all? I installed one yesterday and everything works normally as before, but the alarm does not work at all. The led does not light and the alarm does not arm. I'm hoping that I did something wrong and that this unit isn't DOA, or worse, not able to work at all because the Prius isn't compatible!
