Toyota has come up with a fix for their floor mat woes - a 6-inch zip tie and a warning to use common sense. Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons told Automotive News: "We have reviewed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration what we're calling a semipermanent floor mat installation process, and we're providing these instructions to our dealers." Dealers also are to attach a label to the wire tie warning dealers and customers to ensure that the mat is secured with restraining straps and not to stack one mat over another. So now you have the decision of whether you should waste an hour at a dealership to do this, or spend about $0.08 and do it yourself at home. Or just install them properly in the first place, you know, using those nifty hooks designed to hold them in place. Jalopnik

LOL... duct tape fixes everything! I like this idea more than the zip ties.

See, I like the zip tie idea as opposed to something stupid and expensive. Remember automatic seat belts and 5 MPH bumpers?
Of course I don't think I am stupid enough to let a floor mat kill me either.
You clean them by cutting the zip ties, how else? Replace said zip ties when done, available almost anywhere
Zip ties are KISS, and therefore in my opinion, not stupid

Sorry to veer away from the topic, but ... What was wrong with 5mph bumper?
My old '98 BMW had 9mph bumper.
It stayed in tact while the other guy's fell off.

That's where the semi-permanent part comes in.

Too funny. I did this for many years on my 88 CRX, which had no factory installed anchor hooks, and yes, cut them and replace to clean the mats.

I used white zip ties in my wife's Prius 2005 – it totally works. I used scissors to puncture the mat and the carpet underneath, and then tied the mat to the floor - there is no way the mat comes off now unless the ties are cut. (I did this a number of weeks ago after seeing scary info on the web about this issue).

You can buy about 600 of those zip ties for about $3.00, think of it as disposable safety and clean away.

This is an inexpensive temporary fix to allow customers to use their floor mats again while Toyota works on a permanent fix.

Where do you get zip ties for that price. Lowest I've seen are 500 for $9. If you could tell me where to get 1000 for $10, then I'll be darn happy.

Just get them at home depot. You get 100 for $2.95. That will allow you to clean your drivers mat 50 times before you have to spend another 3 bucks.

BTW, the cheapest 8" online was 20 with shipping.

Was it really that the mats moved that killed that family? The anchors that came with my mats work just fine. Are the anchors really faulty, or is it because you put one mat on top of the other?

A Lexus dealer used mats that were designed for one car, and installed them.. on top of the carpeted mats.. on a different vehicle, i.e. using sequoia mats for a prius. In my opinion, and I do feel sorry for the family that lost their lives, but this is being blown WAY out of proportion. If the mat used was the correct application and had been properly installed, it might never have happened.

    +1

I'd love to have the 5 mph bumper requirement brought back. It's just absurd that current day cars can sustain $2,000 to $10,000 worth of damage in a 5 mph bump.

Didn't know that '98 BMWs had 9 mph bumpers. Solely by appearances, they looked like 5 mph bumpers (not like those '80s BMW bumpers that stuck out a foot and, I think, had little shock absorbers built-in).
