Since this thread is now off the rails, I will throw in that my Explorer seeps from the rear main seal, not enough to drip yet but I noticed it with about 70 or 80k miles, it now has 119k. I previously owned a Ford Ranger which has leaked every possible type of automotive fluid by the time it had 100k miles. I believe they are designed to leak oil as an anti-rust feature.

i have a 1999 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer (for sale buy the way) with a rock solid 5.0 and P-Code heads ... it's a fantastic vehicle, and plenty powerful, always considered it my Mustang GT Station Wagon

it's got 65,000 miles on it, and NO rear main seal leak, in fact no leaks at all

i figured Ford finally got it figured out

sorry to hear yours leaks ... i'm curious, what model/year and motor?

i'm not surprised, with the exception of my Explorer, every Ford truck i've ever owned, or even borrowed, leaked at the rear main seal

i'm on that other board as well :thumb:

I thought that I was the only one on the Explorer board who owned a Prius. Now I'm no longer alone.

I think the reason why that early 80's Ford motor remained leak free so long, was due to the use of heavy duty diesel engine oils from day 1. Eg: a 15W-40 in warm months, a 5W-30 or 0W-30 in cold months.

BTW: still the original front and rear main seals. After 538,000 km they will each drip a couple of drops every 3-4 days. I had an early 1990's Dodge full size van to drive that a client provided, that thing leaked from new!

My 2000 GMC Sierra, the rear axle pinion seal sprung a leak after I had it 2 weeks.

I consider myself gentle on vehicles, and can make them last a LONG time. Eg, that early 80's Ford pickup, I treated it to a paintjob last summer and folks turn their heads to look twice, they think its new
