I am in. I will win. Why? I plan to travel between CA and AZ about every 2 to 3 weeks for the 2 months. :p

... and some people wonder if we can justify our hybrid purchase financially...

To buy a Prius (for me) was a pure financial driven decision. I know I need to drive/commute a lot of miles. Go with Prius for the highest possible mpg is a no brainer. I confess I did not buy Prius for the 'green' reason (environmental friendly, to save the earth, ...). I did it for the other green - money.
Ok, my odometer is about 5500 miles as of today.

Mine is 5200K right now but it is in the body shop. Won't get it back until next week, so it's your chance to get a big lead... damn it!:)

    Hey, Indy,

Sorry to hear your new Prius has to go to body shop. With my previous Toy's experience (own a 180K miles 4Ruuner, a 100K miles S-Runner truck, a over 120K miles LS-400) and the reliability record of Prius so far, our Prius should have a good chance of lasting way over 300K miles without major issue. The gas engine is not always running and the electirc motor has zero defect and needs zero maintenance. The only thing can go wrong is the battery. I was told the Prius has been over-engineered beyond normal specifications. Let's race to see how long and how far it shall last.
    Catch up with me soon.

It's OK. I hit my garage frame when backing up (the back passenger door was opened and I did not notice it). The insurance guy took a look and said, you know what, better get that whole door replaced by a brand new one and I said: great! Door has arrived from Japan today but won't get put in until early next week. Ther goes my deductible...

I really hope Prius take a lot of miles trouble-free because I'm planning to put at least 150K on it before changing...

At our rate of driving, 150K miles is only 2.5 years from now.

Of course, it would help if Mobile 1 or Amsoil actually made a filter for the 2010 Prius...

Sorry, it was a typo, I meant 250K (not 150K), but possibly 300K!

I have put 200K in 2 cars before with just regular maintenance. One was 99 Hyundai Elantra (who said Hyundais are junk?) and the other a 03 Honda Civic.

Now I want to break the 250K mark for the first time with this Prius...

    Sorry, Indy,

Have to tell you that my Prius is over 6,600 miles since Aug. 18. I will put another 1,100 miles this week again. A round trip to Phoenix (380x2) + one week of commuting (71x5) = 1,115 miles. I am not sure I shall be happy or sad.

So I just shopped around for my 5k and I was specifically told by the service guy at the Daly City, Ca service center that synthetic oil is NOT required and that he is testing the specs between the Prius Gen I,II,III with the 5W30. I asked him about the 10k possibility instead of 5k and he said that right now he's just focusing on this test for Toyta....BS or possibly true? In the Bay Area, the cost jumps $50 from $59.99 all the way to $132 for the 5k (the $59.99 is with 5W30).

I'm 6.5K right now... chasing you closely... so, don't get too excited :)

However, my Prius will come back to the body shop and spend 2-3 days there again...

they replaced the door but did not seal the back corner of the window correctly...

0W-20 is factory specified. I would always stay with synthetic. What kind of test that service mgr can do? A long term engine test? It will take too long and beyond his capability.
    Just my 2c.

I had my first oil change @ 5,011 last week at the dealer - with the discount coupons it was $51.68 for the oil change and tire rotation (tax included) w/synthetic 0W20 oil.

Prior to the oil change I was averaging 52-54 mpg (on each tank, 51.0 overall) ~ now after the oil change I've been driving exactly the same, same route to work and getting 47 mpg on this tank (1st tank after oil change)!?!?!?

    Why could this be happening?

Could have overfilled the oil, or maybe used a oil other than 0W20 as recommended.

I agree that you must get it checked out by the dealer or other dealers. 0W-20 oil is like water as my Toyota service mrg said. For hybrid vehicle to achieve high mpg, engine oil can't be too thick. Apparently there is no engine temperature concern from Toyota since they don't even install a temperature gauge on Prius. That's why they can use thin oil like 0W-20. Conventional thick oil will hurt your mpg.

I would say yes, you probably did not get 0W20 oil. You can check the invoice to see if they used 0W20 but can you really trust on what is written? I call several dealers here in IN and WI (2 states I actually live) to check the price of the 5k oil change and service and some dealers did not even know the Prius was supposed to use 0W20.... scary

I'm still bellow 7K but close. How much longer do you have to keep travelling to Phoenix?
