I heard that if the frame around the windshield gets rusted then it will stress the glass to cause it to break. I would check the frame for rusts. Good luck!

Your car insurance should pay for your windshield replacement [maybe in full & shouldn't increase your premium rates (under the comprehensive part of your policy)] & that should include the removal of your mirror from the old (bit of) glass & attaching it to your new glass (as it would in any normal windshield replacement). But I agree with 2009Prius to check for rust (& its cause, if present) in case any body work repairs are in order before the new glass gets set in.

There is special glue available at a windshield repair shop that should work to re-glue it back to the windshield. Not a big problem to fix at all.

 

Of all the problems you could have, this is a hella funny one. Please post video.

Are you saying that the special adhesive you suggest will glue the glass piece back into the remainder of the windshield because I wouldn't trust the safety of the rest of the windshield glass in MVFlyer's car since he wrote in the 2nd line of his original post that when the mirror fell off it took "some of the windshield glass with it!" ?

Rather than replace the windshield because it took part of the glass when the rear view mirror fell off, I suggest using JB Weld to glue the chip and mirror bracket back to the windshield.

I had this issue with the Ford Ranger that I used to own. My GF would grab the mirror to adjust it and she would snap the metal bracket off of the windshield. I glued it back on using the special glue that they sell for that purpose. She broke it off again a few weeks later. After the second time of gluing it on only to have her break it off with her ultra human strength, I glued it on using JB Weld. It never came off again.

O.K., now I get it!! I never heard of that adhesive. Now your brief response makes sense, but do you think that would glue glass to glass? And I wonder why his glass was weak enough in the first place to just let go of a chunk of itself like that. It makes me think that a windshield replacement would be the safest way to go.

JB Weld is a two part epoxy reinforced with steel filings. It is very strong for most purposes and will stick very well to glass. It dries a dark grey, but that shouldn't be a problem because the mirror bracket is in an area where you never need to see through the glass.

Regarding the safety aspect, it is hard to tell without seeing a photo, but I'm thinking that there was probably some type of flaw or defect in the windshield glass at that point. As long as the divot from the mirror bracket doesn't go through, I think it would be ok to attempt a repair. If it is weak, the stresses on the glass from driving (or from temperature variation) will propagate a crack and the windshield would then have to be replaced anyway.

I think its worth a try because its much easier and less hassle than replacing the windshield. JMO.

 

Reviving this old thread since my interior mirror fell off last week. I got in the car and noticed something was missing. It was undamaged on the floor. Weird enough, I was about to go to the dealer to get an oil change, and they glued it back on for me (for free). They told me that the car should not be driven for 24 hours, but I had no other choice at the time. It was fine for 2 weeks, and then it fell off again while someone was closing the rear hatch. The original windshield was replaced about a year ago, so may be the mirror didn't glue the proper way back then. I will try JB Weld as suggested here. Can I use superglue as well?

Also, someone stole a part of my fancy blind spot mirror from the right side. Not having a good 'mirror week'.

 

Super glue is generally not too good on glass.

 

You can also try the special glue they sell at auto parts stores just for gluing the mirror bracket back on. Just remember JB Weld is permanent :madgrin:

 

Yes! Just happened to my Prius. Closed back hatch, rear view mirror fell off and took some glass with it. Very perplexing, and I am SO glad to find I am not alone... Hmmm, now what?
