Sad news for friends of Rufaro (the dog, not the poster by that name)

Two days ago, I had my loyal, brave, smart, funny, fearsome, BIG doglet Rufaro put to sleep, after several weeks of illness.

    He was 13.5 years old.

My heart and my house feel empty, but I know my mother, who died in February, is happy to see her muppet.

Let his name live on here!

Sorry to hear this and know that you have my most heart-felt sympathy.
I will hug Nina a little tighter tonight (much to her chagrin).

Looks like a rough week all around here, with TJ going on the same day as Rufaro, and Hyo bringing us the news of Jack's earlier passing on that day as well. Jack had met Rufaro, so I reckon they'll recognize each other and gather in TJ for some fun games. I hope so, anyway...

Sorry for your loss. It always hurts to lose a loved one. Reguardless if human or animal.

My Sammie girl is 14.5 and had a little doggie stroke recently. It was so traumatic even though recovery is swift. It is sad that they can not live as long as we do. Maybe it is because they love so deeply. I am sure that dogs have the same chance for afterlife as we do....perhaps even more so.

Ouch, I feel your loss, and my heart goes out to you. My Henry died in my arms at the vet before he was given the injection, he was alway trying to help.

I've shed a lot of tears this week.

My heart felt sympathy for your loss. As a dog lover I know how you feel. When I had to put my Maltese to sleep in July 2002 I cried for a week and to this day I tear up thinking of her. I have another Maltese now but I still miss my little girl so much. I also had to put a Pomeranian (his name was Nando) to sleep last year. He was 15. It is so sad that dogs have relatively short lives.

I'm sorry. I have lost my share of pets, too, so I know how you must feel.

Yes, and my mom died in February.

    I can't stop crying.

Sorry for your loss. That's one reason I've held back on getting a cat or dog. You tend to get attached to them moreso than other pets.

My friend's dog passed away a few years ago (natural death) but he was well past the average life expectancy for his specie. His house has felt empty everytime we go over for new year's since then.

It will take awhile, at least it did for me. When I was ready, I started looking at the shelter(s) for another dog to love. It isn't a replacement, but another, different soul that needs love. My GF also decided to get another dog within a month, so now we have two. We still miss Penny, but we have our new friends to love. :)

My heartfelt sympathies. It's so hard to lose a pet because they've always loved you unconditionally. But he lived a long life and I'm sure you gave him a very happy one.

My heartfelt sympathy for your loss - When my 19 year old cat (Krystal) passed away a few Christmases ago it was heartbreaking. The story of the Rainbow Bridge was on a sympathy card I received and I found it comforting... and hope you do, too.

    The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth.
It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge, there is a land of meadows,
hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.
There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old
and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed
are made whole again. They play all day with each other.
There is one thing missing, though.
They are not with their special person who loved them on earth.
So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up!
The nose twitches! The ears are animated! The eyes are staring! And one suddenly runs from the group.
You have been seen, and when you and your special
friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace.
Your face is kissed again and again, and you look once more
into the eyes of your trusting pet.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never
    again to be separated.

    Author Unknown

Since Krystal passed away, we have adopted 3 needy/orphaned kittens (Snowbell is one of them) ... so the family continues. Our indoor cat family of 5 now range in ages from 2 1/2 to 18 years old.

    p.s. Sorry about your mom.

I'd give you a big hug if I could, Susan. I know what it's like to lose a pet, and you have my heartfelt sympathy.

I found the sailboat named Rufaro near San Francisco last week, and took a few pictures for you. I'll email them to you once I've got time to upload the images.

    Thanks Hyo.

I am finding that nothing in my life has ever hurt me as much as this, not my mother's death, not my divorce...nothing. Rufaro was the only being to whom I was everything, and I feel like I let him down. Your virtual hug means a lot.

    Sympathies to you, Rufy --

My experience in pet loss was a pair of Zebra Finches --

"Ex-pats" from a university veterinary lab, they shared a cage for 5 yrs. (normal life span), then died within days of each other.
