Look at my post - install the GPS antenna in the Squaker area (tweeter) - it takes minutes, and works flawlessly.

Will definitely consider that. Reception will most likely be better. I know that there is an area reserved for the antenna (with clips to snap everything in place). I'll decide where to put it once I get the parts.

I'll be busy in the next few weeks so I'll put this on hold for a bit. Will post some pics once I open the dash, and get an exact list of the parts I need. I'll start hunting for parts then.

So, for those who are following this thread, have fun and start your Christmas shopping early. We'll tackle this in a few weeks :)

Frenchie knows all about the original spot - he actually removed the whole dash (BIG job), and ended up placing his antenna in a different spot also (because he could see a better location). Good luck!

Are you talking about HUD system (Head Up Display)?
If yes, all the Prius sale in Belgium have it. Have a glance at :

features and after 'style intérieur ...'
I think that best is to put your question directly with the manufacturer; I am persuaded that you will obtain an answer.

    Best regards,

OK, so lets try to get this thing back on the OP's rails.....

COST AND QUALITY ASIDE, what are the technical barriers between a II, III, and having OEM nav?

-I have a II so the JBL seperate amp would be an issue, but would a substitute amp in place make the OEM NAV possible?

-Would the 6 vs. 8 speakers present any major problems in the function of the NAV audio software?

-What peripherals are necessary for an OEM nav to function properly? (does a II need a mic installed for bluetooth via the NAV HU? GPS antenna? Backup camera? anything else im missing)?

There isn't now, but will likely be a market for used 2010 nav's. so lets try to get ready if this route becomes a financially feasible route.

So finally opened the dash today to see what's inside. The wiring is mostly what's expected as per the schematic. I didn't see L42, so to install the OEM NAV, it must be wired from Junction Box no. 4.

Now, I tried to see if I can access Junction Box No. 4 since most of the missing wires are from there. Unfortunately it's hidden deep inside the dash (I removed the glovebox and the radio headunit and I can see it, but not touch it ). See the attached pictures to see what I mean (it's located behind the gray pillar between the radio headunit and the glovebox, the big black wire bundle goes there).

So this looks like I need to take apart the whole dash in order to access it. And I'm not 100% sure if the wires I need are inside that Junction Box. So now I'm wondering if it's still worth the effort...

    Update:

There are three connectors on the back of the headunit (referring to TIS, they are L40, L41, and L45). The 2nd connector from the left (see 3rd pic) is not used. I couldn't find the connectors for the satellite radio. When I looked under the driver's seat, there is no satellite radio receiver (which is present for the NAV equipped Prius). Therefore the satellite radio is built into the headunit (for JBL equipped cars only). If I swap the headunit I will need to install the OEM satellite receiver as well.

I'm beginning to consider an aftermarket head unit. As I mentioned earlier, Kenwood and Pioneer are on the top of my list. The biggest obstacle would be to find a harness for a JBL equipped car. So far, all Prius chatters who installed an aftermarket HU did it on a base car (Prius II) which is not JBL equipped. I'll keep researching this and I'm sure myself or someone on this forum will figure this out. I know the following so far:

    - An adaptor is available to interface the JBL amp with the pre-amp outputs.
    - An adaptor is available to interface the touch tracer to the remote control (to control the new head unit from the steering wheel)

If I were to do it all over again, I would not get the factory nav - it's a real disappointment. The Bluetooth link is terrible, and the address data is not accurate. My $200 Garmin is much more accurate, easier to use and has a better Bluetooth interface. There is a thread here on the installation of a JVC which is much less then the factory setup, and apparently a much better unit.

This is actually the dealer installed NAV I mentioned earlier. Interestingly, the GPS antenna is mounted on top of the vents (under the middle of the dash). I might consider this spot if the antenna does not fit under the front speaker cover.

The idea for my sentence was to give others a start point for the installation work - what to open, what to connect, location of the harness and so on. Unfortunately we dont have a more detail guide linked with the pictorial.
The TNS510 is a Toyota "original", but far behind from competitors.

Did you get the OEM nav installed in the end? In the UK it's only available in the top level, not an option for any others. i'd like to install either the premium system or the TNS510, not too fussed which. Has anyone actually done either?

If you want the Toyota Nav (OEM is a relative term), they are getting pretty available - new for $1800 (Ebay), and used form $1200+.

You also need the JBL amp, and would need wiring - but it looks like a fairly basic install.

I think i already have the JBL system (brochure says 8 speakers) but not 100% on this.

i also can't seem to find out if the tns510 will put directions on the HUD...

Your HU will show "JBL" on it if you have JBL. If JBL, you could get an upgrade in the $2K range (plus install). I think that may be what it costs when you buy the car (???) - if you already have a PKG III (JBL).

The nav and non-nav cars are quite different, even if the specs look similar (eg: both have bluetooth, JBL, etc). In the end I got an aftermarket unit. It's still technically possible to install the original, but you will have cut some wires and rewire new harnesses (the plugs where the harnesses plug into at the back of the nav and non-nav head units are also different). This was something I decided it's not worth the risk. Here's my thread on installing the aftermarket nav:

    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...ket-nav-install-canadian-premium-package.html

My car is JBL equipped but has no nav. If yours has JBL, then your installation should almost be identical to mine.

    Hi guys,

i installed a Prius OEM UK SATNAV unit in my german Prius without SATNAV.
    And "one more thing"...

The installed unit was from a RHD and my Prius is a LHD!
The front of the SATNAV unit is not symmetrically an i has modified the dash trim. It fit´s not perfectly, but it works.

The OEM wire harness must be modified and completed.
-The 5 wires from microphone connector must moved from one to other OEM connector
-A new GPS antenna is needed (10$)
-Speed signal must moved from one to other OEM connector (1 wire)
-CAN bus must completed from car wires (2 wires)
-Ignition (i connected this to ACC on OEM connector, 1 wire)
