are you currently using the Amsoil 5W30 with a 4k OCI?
yes, you can switch to the SSO 0W30

your filter application is a Wix 51396

walmart typically has some really good deals on oil, particularly if you're willing to jump from brand to brand, and stick to the factory OCI

pickings get much slimmer if you're just going to use a synthetic with a cold weight of 0

that mobil 1 is a good deal :thumb:

I just want to say, I'd like some resolution on this issue before my next oil change. This has the potential of saving me hundreds of dollars while keeping my warranty intact.

it would only impact your warranty if you experienced an oil related engine failure, and then that failure would have to be traced to the extended OCI

what is the recommended oil filter change interval for the 2010 Prius ... 5k or 10k?

you can stick to factory specified OCI and have an oil related failure traceable directly back to your behavior and still void your warranty

gee ... i didn't mean to confuse the matter further

I'm currently using Kendall Semi-Synthetic oil 5W-30. I want to change to the Amsoil 5W-30 or 0W30, I do about 18k per year, and winter here floats around 0C.

Is there something I need to do to switch to full synthetic oil, as you mention earlier running detergent through the crankcast (which i'm not sure what this means)?

Ah, can you guarantee that in writing? If my engine breaks and Toyota won't cover it, will you?

Ah, would it were that that was the only issue. It is very easy to reset the reminder--I forget the directions, but it is easy to find in the OM. I did it (in about 30 sec) just so I wouldn't have to endure the electronic finger-wagging for just a few days. It's in the 'DIY maintenance' portion of the manual--easy to find. Easier than the TPMS reset.

    The fear is unfounded.

Can you guarantee in writing they will void the warranty if they know for a fact you went to 10K instead of 5K on your change interval with synthetic?

    It isn't there???
Why is everybody so worried about it?

There has been plenty of discussion about this so far in this thread alone.
Recommendations are "guidelines when all else fails".

Stop signs, redlights and taxes are "not" recommendations.... oil change interval is.

Based on the environment and use of the car will determine the absolute best choice for oil type and change interval.

The guy who changes his oil at 15K with a synthetic rated at 25 or 35K is likely doing more good for the engine than the guy who changes at 10K with a synthetic only rated at 10K.

Fear is whats making this complicated.

We don't want to think and be educated, we want someone to tell us what to do with absolutes.....

Just FYI - for those wishing to extend from 5K to 10K their service interval, there is a simple way to "reset" the oil maintenance message.

Turn off the car, then turn it on while holding the KPH/MPH button. This resets the 5K counter...

Not exactly a Right Stuff kind of issue, more $$ out of my pocket following internet hearsay. Rather see Toyota put 10k in writing.

Thanks.. I had forgotten to mention that... you can go into maintenance and set it for anything you wish.. it doesn't have to be 5K.

You can add one more thousand miles if you want to extend another K or whatever.
But once the Maintenance screen pops up you have to reset it to make it go away, if you change your "mileage before due time" before it trips you can head it off at the pass.

In other words, there is no reason to put up with the screen bothering you unless your using it as a reminder and you want it to pester you till you do something about it.

I was under the impression that only reset the reminder in the nav system? are you sure it does the one on the MFD as well?

I didn't see the whole sequence - this is from EZW1 - and someone else mentioned it's in the manual...

You didn't tell the whole story. You,
    1. Push the Trip button until the ODO displays totoal elapsed miles (not Trip A or . Turn car off.
    1. Do not put your foot on the brake
    2. Hold the Trip button down and do not release
    3. Push the power button twice
    4. Continue to hold the Trip button until the ODO cycles through its dance and displays elapsed miles again.
    5. Release Trip button and turn power off.

Going off how the GenII works, I think they are linked.

If the reminder in the nav system engages because your within a few miles of where you set it, once it goes a little farther the "maintenance" or MFD screen comes and blocks your screen.

At that point, simply resetting the nav will not do anything to the maintenance MFD screen and you have to reset it too with the chicken dance.

But as long as you either keep the mileage far enough ahead in the nav so that it doesn't trip the maintenance screen you won't have to deal with it.

I pulled the dipstick as Mine just hit 5K and it looks like regular oil would in about a week.
It almost looks like I just put it in!

I reset my Nav to another 1K miles and reset my maintenance "with the chicken dance" and I get no alerts or warnings anymore at all.

For the more environmentally astute Prius owners, it has been reported that if you substitute a heart made of tofu the process still works. No substitute for the real Pluto though.

OK I guess I'm a bit confused here, this is how I reset the 5K oil change reminder:

    1. with car on go to trip A
    2. turn car off
    3. hold down the MPH-Km/h button while starting the car in the normal fashion
    4. keep holding the MPH-Km/h button until the odometer indicates the oil reminder is reset.

That works fine, I have done it a couple of times now. But in 5K miles the reminder on the MID comes back on again.

Is there a way I can make the reminder come back on in 10K miles instead of 5K, or some other number of miles greater than 5K? Or better yet is there a way I can turn the reminder off completely?

I have never tried to use the maintenance reminder in the nav system because I think one in your face reminder is one to many. Or does the one in the nav system overide the other one and lets me increase the mileage between reminders?

Why are cars sold in the U.S. the only ones with this reminder? Do the Japanese Overlords just naturally think that Americans are stupider than anyone else who buys their cars? Or is it true?

Just go into maintenance in the nav and I remember there is a "reminder" button at the top of the screen..... I suppose that turns it off and on.

But yes, you can set it to anything you want I suppose... I set mine for only 1K, for the moment, but I'm assuming you can set it to 15K or anything you want.

Unless the oil and filter is unique, it should be just like all the other reminders... tires, transmission etc.. many of which you set for more than 5K.
