Gullible much? But it's so fun to try to insult your percieve ignorance of prius owners isn't it? Spend a few minutes searching the technical discussions here smart guy, you'll find that we have many members with incredible understanding of the Prius and cars in general and are fully capable of standing our ground in any technical discussions.

That said, the Highlander Hybrid has been converted to Turbo and there's even a 'snap on' kit:
AirWerks turbo available for Highlander Hybrid — Autoblog Green

Enough money and enough motivation can produce just about anything. But with a Prius it would make more sense, IMO, to convert it to a Miller cycle from Atkinson cycle with the addition of a super charger...still, no small task.

If you could figure out the programming and determine the drivetrain limit, I would go for NO2. Simple bottle takes my CTS-V from about 400 HP to around 600HP. Rear axle is the weak link in the Caddy, there is always a weak link.

Actually, if you build a funny car it would not have too many Prius parts. Funny cars are the ones with the steel tube chassis and the flip up plastic body shell. Called funny cars because they look nothing like the car they are based on. Normally a funny car will have a long bonnet too.

my interest in a power adder for the prius is to give the gas motor more pulling power when you go deep, or to generate more power to quickly charge the electrical battery system, and obviously to allow for more spirited driving when the need, desire or urge presents itself

    ... not for dragracing

i think a big shot of NO2 for the little Pri may be a little much, and rather lacking in utility

That's my feeling. You could slap any body down on a funny car engine and frame and if it was designed to vaguely or directly look like a Prius call it a "Prius" funny car BUT would it really be a Prius? In my opinion no...it would just be a funny car made to look like a Prius.

Look, I agree that adding a turbo on a Prius will require a lot of work, but the job you're describing is something I'd do if I wanted to take my Evo (or an STi) to 450hp+. It's kind of overkill. For a Prius, it *may* be possible to use a smallish turbo with low boost that would not require a built engine (though it isn't something I would recommend).

16.990 is the best posted I could find. Are you sure it wasn't a swapped Prius? A few people have come along asking about engine swaps (I remember on guy who wanted to put a 2JZ in) - maybe one of them was successful.

I am personally reducing the weight and improving the suspension of my Prius gen2 to improve performance. This is focused on reducing rotating mass.

I suppose you wouldn't be happy in the legendary AE86 either, given your driving style. Driving isn't supposed to be easy - otherwise watching the computer cars on Gran Turismo would be enough. I will admit however that a modification to improve powertrain system response (such as individual throttle bodies are meant to do in N/A applications) would be a plus.

I'm actually another one of the few who would like more power out of this car. My friends drag race in the 1/8th mile so I've played along at the track. (several videos on youtube) I've removed the rear seat, spare, and trim as well as the muffler and air box lid and actually gained about .6 in the 1/8th. There really isn't much left in this car with the current powertrain. The biggest issue I had was inverter temps. I would really like to swap a Camry Hybrid powertrain including battery pack and inverter into a Prius chassis. That car(Camry Hybrid) does 0-60 in 8.7 sec. per Toyota and weighs roughly 600lbs more than the Prius.

Has anyone looked at playing with the smog (as in removing/modifying)? Many states no longer require smog on these cars - and I know in the old days, this was the way we used to improve power............

Just a question.... Please don't bother responding with an "environmental stance" - that's not what this thread is about.

+1. Besides, you might blow the welds on the intake which would lead to your floor falling out.

Have you tried using different wheels/tires to reduce rotating mass? It ought to improve acceleration - but I don't expect you'll get more than a tenth out of it.

Removing smog usually means reducing restriction in the exhaust system. On the Prius engine, I'm not sure there's much on the way of gains to be had - maybe if you went straight pipe you'd get2-3hp (at most)?

I can go pick up a few of my old cars (sold to friends) and show you what real daily driver power is. :)

That may be true today (are you sure?) - I know there are many pieces to the smog system - besides a straight exhaust. A lot of it has to do with recirculating air - but I do not know what is used on today's cars.

I'm fairly certain you would be talking about FAR more than 2-3 hp.

There is no need to remove smog equipment on most modern cars to make more power. I've raced with and without cats and various other smog related parts (Mustang, Trans AM, Camaro, Corvette, and full-size GM trucks) and the difference is negligible and irresponsible. This doesn't take into account non-CARB items because oftem times non-CARB certified items do not have much of an effect on emissions as tested on a dyno.

Modern engines require a certain amount of backpressure to function properly. I've tested this by removing exhaust pieces to the point of open headers using exhaust cut outs and all you accomplish is making more noise. It did not provide quicker ETs or quantifiable evidence of more HP on the dyno unless you ran high HP engines or with turbos. Intake systems can sometimes be improved for more power but my experience with low HP import cars has shown me that you have to install and extensive list of mods to even get close to a 20hp gain unless you start off with an FI car.
