Your Prius a/c system is smaller, lighter, more compact and uses less energy to operate it, (that's the good side). Now comes the trade off ( BAD SIDE) Electric hybrids a/c compressors are vary unforgiving to being operated on a low refrigerant charge. This is why it is so important that a customer of a Prius taking their car in for A/C service or repair find a shop that has the best tools for the job to have the highest % chance to fine refrigerant leaks. As shop owner or TECHs this means less time on the job and maybe not having to tell the customer they have to come back a second time. With the introduction of the new refrigerant R1234YF this year and Hybrid a/c systems they have the new standard for performance requirements SAE J2913. I had six of the predecessor models to this unit in the photo, they all broke in one way or another, wear out the switches,bad solder connections on the circuit board, a couple of bad batteries, battery contacts connectors, the list goes on. At nearly $400 each that's no small chunk of change to sneeze at, and I have many other brands. This one feels much different in my hand , just as if you have cheap plastic toys in your hand then someone hands you some thing constructed solidly like a IPHONE. A low Prius A/C system uses more gas to do the same cooling !.
