When I was 15 and just starting I had to use a analog Micron meter. #1: It had to be at room temperature. #2: Make sure the 6 D size battery's were good, and they ran down fast. #3: plug in the sensor on the end of the wire. #4: touch the sensor to the metal face plate to ground it. #5 use your small jewel screwdriver to adjust the meter to 0. No automotive class would teach you that.
