Prius hicup

    We got in the car in the morning ready to head off on the day's festivities and car started up normally, but then would not switch into gear or turn off. All other functions worked (map, radio, windows, locks). I finally pushed my fob into the slot and still nothing. Then after about 2 min of me constantly pushing the power button it finally shut down. I pulled the fob out and restarted it and it worked fine. Anyone else experience this?

    It sounds like you got stuck in IGN-ON mode. Perhaps your foot wasn't firmly on the brake when you pushed POWER. Chances are, the word READY was not displayed on the speedometer.

    When this happens, the car should still shift between N and P, but will refuse to go into D or R. It should also go into READY mode if you push on the brake and punch the button one more time.

    But there is a known issue with some cars getting stuck in IGN-ON. I've heard of two remedies:

    Shift into Neutral (Press brake and hold shifter at N for two seconds) and then back into Park (push the P button). Try shutting down again.

    If that doesn't work, try press-and-hold on the POWER button for a good five seconds or more, and it should do an unconditional shutdown.

    You've done no damage, and it probably won't happen to you again, but good practice in the future is to press the brake firmly, and press POWER firmly when starting up.

    The power button was orange. I pushed the brake down as hard as I could. No error icons on the display. I do not remember seeing a ready. Tried to shift into neutral but no luck.

    I will have to remember the holding of the power button. Thanks

    The orange power button is the sign of IGN-ON mode on newer models. In Ready mode the Power button is dark.

    All the 12 V accessories will work, and normally you can go directly to READY from there by stepping on the brake and pushing POWER, or simply shut down by pressing POWER without a foot on the brake.

    It should shift into Neutral too, but remember that any time you shift out of Park, your foot must be on the brake.

    But if it's in "stuck" mode, these things may not work. I'm sure it's been discussed here, but my searches are coming up empty at the moment.

    Ah, the4 dreaded hang on Ig-On! I know it fairly well. Been trying to find the cause of that, but I did find the workaround.

    When hung in Ig-On, you can't go to READY, and it won't power off, not even the emergency power off will work if your foot is on the brake.

    Instead, take your foot, OFF the brake, hit power.
    Car is off now. Try again going to READY normally.

    I thought it might have to do with a glitch in the immobilizer not seeing the fob when it reverifies authentication going from Ig-On to READY. If that were the case however, you would get the immobilizer symbol. When I got the hang, no symbol.

    hhhmmm it might have not seen the fob. I usually have it clipped to my belt loop but this time put it in my cargo pants pocket which is just above the knee on the left side.

    I got the stuck on mode once or twice when I first got my car.
    It hasn't happened in over 6 months now. I think it was caused
    by too fast a power button push.

    When it happened the power went off fine when I held the button till it reset.
    Then I started over and it started up normally.

    I now hold the button down for about 1 second and this seems to work every time.

    (My fob stays in my right pants pocket.)

    If it doesn't see the fob in the initial stage of powering up, it won't come on at all, and you'll get the car symbol.

    First the power system gets the car into Ig-On. You'll notice the amber light on the power button for a bit. Once it gets to Ig-On mode, the HV is requested to go to READY. At this time, the HV requests a second check on the fob ID.

    I found this out one day while I was fixing my lawnmower while listening to tunes in ACC mode. I had a thought: can I get to READY without the fob?
    I could not, though I could get to Ig-On, and it hung there, unless I pressed the power button without holding the brake. I got the car symbol then. Later I spontaneously got the Hang on Ig-On, but no car symbol.

    This usually happens when you accidently double-tap the Power button with the brake depressed (easier to do than it sounds).

    As said, the solution is easy. I usually just hit Park and shut down and restart. The hold the power button for 5 seconds works fine too.

    I have had something like that..seems like you do have to firmly hold the brake before hitting power. If you hit power and have not pushed the brake, or you let it go too quick, whatever., the car goes to IGN ON mode, and I read in the owners manual, that
    1) press on brake and hit power button again

    or

    2) press and hold power till IGN ON mode goes off and car powers down. Then push brake firmly, and power up. Don't hit power button too quickly, press- hold a second or so and let go button.

    You are dealing with a computer and electrical signals, not like a gas engine car, or a starter situation. In order for the computer of the car to place car in READY mode, a brake "ON" and and power "ON" must be registered at the same time, if the two signals do not occur together, the car defaults to IGN ON and may need a RESET (Powering down). Been reading a bunch of stuff and that is one of the CAVEATS, that are clearly noted on this hybrid model.
