Thanks jwads, I understand. As others have indicated in this thread, this is a fairly simple circuit - however, it does require at least some experience with soldering and building circuits with components. If you don't have at least some experience with it, it's probably not for you, unless you want to read some electronics hobby books and attempt the circuit build. Sorry, it is unfortunately not a simple cut and replace with a switch. The NAV unit requires much more than that, in order to defeat the lockout.

This circuit accomplishes exactly what the Prestigious Society unit does (with the same position inaccuracy while on), with the exception of automatically reverting back to normal operation after 5 minutes. However, the PS unit is much easier to install, being pretty much "plug and play". (It also costs $250-$300.)

Sorry, I really can't make it a whole lot simpler. Since it's a DIY circuit build, it requires the ability to read a schematic and work with DIY circuit boards and components. I had considered laying out a custom circuit board and selling it with the parts on eBay - but I'm not sure I want to expose myself to the legal implications....We are a litigious society.... too bad...

Hmmm... I don't think I was assuming everyone has, or should have, experience in electronics. This really has little to do, and does not require, having a degree in electronics, and I was not making the "assumption" that you suggest. I am sorry if I was making it seem more simple than it really is. I was really only pointing out where the information resides. It's up to individuals to decide whether it's within their ability or not.

While it is a fairly simple circuit that is very commonly used in hobby electronics (many kids build these circuits), I certainly know that not everyone has the experience, time, etc. (nor interest in learning it, for that matter). I understand that, and that's OK! And for those folks, the Prestigious Society unit is probably a better idea.

Would it have been better for hawkmoon and me to not post the circuit, since it's not so simple? I don't think so, since there are some folks who will be comfortable with building it.

Again, sorry if I was giving the impression that it was simpler than it is. Wasn't my intent.

No offense Jayvee as there are many folks who could utilize the info you freely share to save some bucks and have a fun project too boot.

I'm just saying each career has its own language thats foreign to those who do not tinker in the field.. .from medical, lawyers, Oil drillers and mudloggers, fishermen, telephone repairmen, the cable guy etc etc etc.

With knowing simple ohms law, I built a hydroelectric system thats been in operation from when I built it 24 years ago until now. It makes about 1400watts continuous at 24V, then inverted to 110 after passing through 6000lbs of lead calcium batteries... I had full telemetry in my home of all functions and I built the board....and I still couldn't build your board without some homework.

Most circuit boards are intimidating from first look as they look like a city being viewed from a plane when in reality, most are many simple circuits applied to the same board.

Even though I cannot utilize your knowledge I appreciate the fact you are willing to share it.

Since you know there is a market, maybe you could put together some of these boards and put them up for sale?

It would be no different than guys who tinker with flashlights and lasers and then sell their unique product.

It would sure make it easier for most of us who really do need a simple plug and play.

Thanks for the reply - Yes, I've thought about that - but this isn't quite as innocuous as a flashlight. Someone who uses this device improperly and gets into an accident may try to come after the person who designed and provided the circuit (and board), even though it was their own decision to use it and modify their vehicle, knowing the risks. As cynical as it sounds, there are way too many in our society who refuse to take responsibility for their own actions. This, I'm sure, is the reason that Toyota locked it out in the first place...

Yes, its sad people take any opportunity they can to screw somebody.

With all the other functions in the car that require attention off the road from the windshield visor, to the radio, A/C controls, CD player, Mirrors, vents, cell phones with full internet, and all sorts of messaging, its sad they have to be so paranoid about navigation.
God forbid we need to "navigate while moving".. geeze.. who needs that?

Regardless, I don't know where you could draw the line in the sand that shields you from lawsuit.
I suppose once you take a profit for your plans, part, or projects is when you become vulnerable.

I don't suppose the project is "illegal" , its just that Toyota doesn't want the liability because they are such a big target with lots of money.

I suppose "Prestigious Society" is taking the same chance.

If you could build half of the board and advertise it simply as a viewer "while moving" that cannot receive input, and then the other half as a tester and let the buyer put the two together at his own risk?..... just thinking....

I would be willing to sign a disclaimer with my own blood if that would help?

Perhaps rather than shed blood, you might just order the Prestigious Society one if you want a plug-n-play solution. I was too busy/lazy to build one, so that's what I did. Nicely put together kit, btw.

I'm still working up the nerve to pull my whole console out.. the idea doesn't thrill me just yet.

Your far more astute with electronics than I, I suppose that will have to be my option.

I'm with you on the console disassembly... my Prestigious Society unit is still in the box in my living room :-s

    LOL!.......

Thats funny!...... I'm sure I'll warm up to it once I"m convinced there is not an easier way... heck I haven't even hardwired my radar detector in yet, still using the plugin.... too busy..... things will get done in time.

I admit, this made me nervous too, but suck it up people! If I can do it, anyone can. :D

All I can say is good job!.... look at an arts and craft store for some paint pens that may match the dash if that mark can't be cleaned off.

Even walmart has paint pens in the automotive section.

I would put on a dab and immediately wipe excess off with a cloth hoping the rubbed part would catch the paint.

Anyway.. great pics.. still looks intimidating.. guess I'm a wuss with my brand new 32K car that doesn't have a scratch yet.... I hate to initiate it with a scratch in such a visible spot!

Just seems like lots of room for error to crack, split, scuff, or just flat break something.

I guess if you went slow and meticulously it may be ok.... Like I say, this isn't your headlight assembly, this is very visible if you screw something up!

I'll have to think about this for a while!

Sure theres not a DVD hack we could do?... that would be too easy!
Those things are hard to burn too!

I've done some pretty daring things when I feel good about it... but I don't quite have that feeling yet on this one!

Here's a 4th option which uses the "DEST" and "MAP" buttons that come with the car to enable and disable navigation and phone inputs. Basically the same as the prior solutions but doesn't add a new switch. It is a bit more challenging, but some of the more adventurous hackers may want to give it a shot, so I'll share the schematic and some photos. More images here:

they locked it out because they are a deep pocket, so the suits were inevitable ... you simply need the disclaimer that it is so the passenger can use the nav while the driver focuses on driving, and have the buyer sign a waiver releasing you from all liability should they be injured from "driving while distracted" ... which is a moving a violation in my neck of the desert :thumb:

Sorry for my ignorance, but never having had a navi system I have to ask, is it illegal for the driver to access it while driving? Just while in motion though? Can input while at a red light?

I tried googling but just found a bunch of articles about how it is illegal to use navi on your cell phone in Australia. ?

Oh, also, are you not even able to see the map while driving? This all seems pretty silly to me, it's a navi system and most of the time there is only me in the car.

I can't speak to the laws, but the intent is that the driver not be distracted while driving.

Certain features are available, but the more distracting features such as entering an address are disabled. But you can select certain features such as 'go home'.

I think that having the right side HUD show restaurants and tips about the next exit is far more of a distraction than setting my destination.

    Oh, I agree.
Which is why I would like to override the limitations on the NAV.

Wow, I read every post on this thread (several days). I have an 07 and am wondering if the circuits created by Hawkmoon and Jayvee will work for mine.

I hope Im not asking something that has been answered previously but there is a TON of info out there to sort through.

btw, is there a way we can take a lengthy thread like this and come up with a summary of the relevant solutions so the next guy doesnt have to spend so much time trying to find the results?

Thanks again to the Hawkmoon and Jayvee.

I agree, maybe another thread, or informative "sticky note" with just the instructional stuff in it.
