As a point of reference for those coming up on the 5K mile service, I had it performed this week for $69.88 (special) + $16 up-charge for 0W20 synthetic oil.

Most local papers have tire+oil changes for around $20. Bring in your own oil+filter, and you get to around $45....

Okay, here's maybe a dumb question. My car is telling me it's time to get my service. I guess the notification/reminder was set at 6 months when I bought the car. However, I'm still a good 1000 miles away from 5000. So do I wait until I hit 5000, or should I do as the car suggests and bring it in now?

My dealer tells me their typical price for a 5K service is $119- that's at Novato Toyota.

Stream, since I see you're in the SF Bay area, have you considered taking your Prius to Luscious Garage? I think I may make the special trip to the city just to have it done when I need it.

Strictly speaking, the warranty says 5,000 miles or 6 months. How much longer will it take you to reach 5K?

If it were my car and at the rate I put miles on it (2,000 miles/month), I would turn the warning off per the procedure in the manual, and wait for 5K.

But what do they charge for service per Toyota's warranty requirement which is basically just an oil change?

    Might be a big difference.

The warranty booklet says to perform scheduled maintenance at X miles or Y months, whichever comes first.

They're much farther than the local dealer, and I just checked their site for kicks, and they charge $110 ($24 more than I paid).

Unfortunately, the 5K mile service also includes tire rotation, which adds $40 to an oil/filter service.

    OUCH!

My dealer charges $15 (up from $9) for a rotation.

I bought my Prius from Novato Toyota also and had them do my 5K service last month. They chrged me 14.95 for tire rotation since I had gotten a free oil+filter change coupon from them. Since you bought your car there, I assume you got the coupon also.

Yes- with my free oil change offer I will only have to pay the same $14.95 for tire rotation. That $119 was for a full 5,000 mile service, not the minimum oil and tire rotation.

I will likely takey car there when it is time- were you satisfied with their service?

I was very satisfied. They did complete 5K service, except inspection of brake pads. They will inspect them at 10K. Sevice person told me that Prius brake pads will probably outlast the car, since brake pads are minimally used in this car.

If this were my first oil change, I would do it at 4k miles. C'mon man, you've got a V. Give it a treat.

Just had my 5k Service done today @ Longo Toyota. They had a special for $49 but is $69 with 0W-20 Oil.

Replace Engine Oil and Oil Filter
    Rotate Tires
    Reset 'Maintenance Required' Light
    Inspect :
    -Air Filter
    -Steering Linkages
    -Body/Chassis Nuts and Bolts
    -Brake Linings Discs/Drums
    -Ball Joint and Dust Covers

I only paid $51.93 because the guy @ the counter didn't know my car used 0W-20 oil and offered me the $49 special price. yeah~~

I'm at 3820 (I only put 400-500 miles a month on the car). Called my dealer and they said if I was still under 4000, I could get away with waiting another month or so. So it will be a Christmas treat for my V. :)

My car will be 6 months in service next week. But, I only have 2100 miles on it. I think I will wait a little longer for service.
