New to the Prius scene...in fact, I've only driven one.

Specific to the 05, anything special I need to know or check?

In general, any good resources to bring me up to speed on how to drive/care for/etc the vehicle?

    Excited about the new car!

Also, I'm trying to figure out which package it is. It has JBL, leather, smart key...not sure what else.

I asked the same exact question when I bought my used Prius 2 months ago. Didn't get many replies and didn't need them. Just keep reading these forums and asking questions when you have them and you'll be gold.

If it has leather and navigation it's definitely Package 6, unless the leather is aftermarket, which is usually not the case.

Also how many miles does the car have? That will determine what kinds of warranty coverage the car has. Boring questions to ask, I know, but good to know.

It's probably the BC Package. The leather was most likely added later. If you go to John's page you can find more information about that particular package.

As for purchasing a 2005 there are a few things I would do. Look inside each of the doors to see the welding. If it is smooth it's very likely there was no side implact crash. A pie crust type weld would indicate the doors were redone. Outside of the drive and making sure that all the components work I would take it to a certified toyota mechanic and explain to him you are considering a purchase. He or she will check it out and give you a good to go or a no go. Carfax is a good option also, but I wouldn't do it without the mechanic check.

    Best of Luck!

    Need to know?

    - steering wheel recall
    - ECU update

those should've been done. Other than that, no major issues. Check the condition of both batteries (12V and hybrid). If it's still on the original 12V, it might be time to get a new one (like most cars that are 5 years old.. of course the condition of the battery is vary greatly so don't take this as all cars older than 5 years must have already changed batteries)

    Thanks folks.

How do I find out about the steering wheel and ECU update?

Seller is taking it to an independent Toyota mechanic this morning.

According to the pdf I posted (which came from Toyota) it looks like a package #5 (AI) with driver and front passenger seat-mounted side and front and rear side airbags, the homelink mirror, the smart key system, and the jbl system. Sound right?

Anyone know what the ECU update does, and is it worhtwhile to pursue a dealer about it?

The hybrid vehicle and engine ECUs need to have a firmware update to prevent stalling. The steering gear intermediate shaft needs to be replaced.

Both items were SSCs (aka recalls) and if you decide to buy the car, all you have to do is to have any Toyota dealer's service dept check the VIN. If the SSCs were not performed, the dealer will do the work for you at no charge.

    Any chance to buy 2006-2009?
    They are improved from 2004-2005.

well, the 05 purchase fell through. mechanic inspection found that it had been in an accident, and the body work was pretty shoddy.

now looking at an 05 w 43k miles, BC package. $15500 TTL included sound like a good price?

    Ken, would you suggest a 05 w/ 43k miles, or 06 w/ 66k...all other things being equal?

    thx

Depends on where you are. Mine (BC package) was 16,400 TTL with 32k miles, and that was an outstanding deal here in NC. Heck, the dealer in Durham is selling 07-08's with 50k for 22K without TTL. And those were BASE packages.

    Is the 06 also repaired?
Anyway, if I were you, I'll take 06.

Just to wrap up my buying experience, I ended up going w/ the 06. Missed out on the nav and BT that another 05 had, but i came in under budget.

thanks all...looking forward to this community.
