A strange thing happened yesterday. :?

I was at a store and my friend went in to do some shopping. I stayed in the car with the A/C running and the radio playing. After some time the battery indicator was down into the 2nd bar from the bottom and the ICE started to "pump up" the battery. I have read elsewhere that this should be the normal mode of operation and, in fact, set this situation up just to test it.

The strange thing happened next. I decided to go into the store so I powered the car down (brake pedal/Power button), exited and locked the doors using the button in the door handle. I returned some 10 minutes later with my friend with me (he also has a fob, had it in his pocket and he was on the same side of the car). When I touched the door handle I got the two beeps but the dor remained locked. Repeated this a couple of times with the same result. Then I tried the un-lock button on the fob. Same result. It almost sounded like the door locks were cycling from lock to unlock and then back to lock again. I finally resorted to using the real key which worked.

Has anyone else seen/experienced this? I'm curious because I'm wondering if it was because of the low battery (shouldn't be since only the 12 Volt battery is involved in the door unlock process) or could it have been because the car/computer got confused with two fobs on the same side of the car and within detection range?

    Ideas?

I've never had that happen to me but here is a guess at what might be the problem. Maybe it is a sticky door-lock button? That is the last thing you touched before the problem started so if somehow the button was like in a half-on, half-off intermittant position that might be causing it to lock immediately after you unlock it by touching the handle. Just a guess, maybe you can try playing around with the door-lock button to see if the problem repeats. If it is the problem then Toyota should replace the faulty button.
