How long a wait in Canada these days?

    New member here...

Has anyone recently ordered a car in the Toronto area? How long a wait is it typically to get a 2010 Prius? My current car is coming off lease in lease than 6 months and I want to time things right. I've been dying to get a Prius and the third gen version is just so awesome.

    Let me know.

    Thx.

    Jordan.

6 months should be enough time. A typical factory order takes 1½ months from the day you place the order at the dealership to the day it arrives at the dealership. (Adjust the time accordingly depending if you're on the west coast or east coast).

I hope this timing holds. We ordered the Premium w/ solar on 31 Oct. The dealer's computer screen indicated an October production month, but as of yesterday, it still showed "in production". We have our fingers crossed for it to arrive before xmas.

I ordered mine, Base+Premium+leather seats+a few other accessories, on Oct 29 at Don Valley North Toyota (DVNT). Delivery date is Nov25. I got the reply with the VIN that it will arrive at the dealership next week. But I knew it was on their "coming list" when I signed the contract. Most dealers have the Base+Premium in their showrooms. If you are picky on exterior/interior colour and options, I'd say give them at least 2 months for delivery. Price also went up in the past three weeks. Don't forget, DVNT and Markham Toyota are owned by Toyota Canada and they may have priority to their stocks. FYI: The contract fineprints give the dealers a window of 90-day for shipment delay. That means they can delay the shipment 90-days after the specified delivery date and you can not back out from your contract. If over the 90-day window, the best you can get is your deposit back.
I'll post my experience with my new Prius in the next few weeks.

Well toyolover below ordered two days before you and has an ETA of end of Nov. It should arrive before Christmas I'd think. It'll be close though.

I'm not aware of any price increases by TCI. It still reads $27,500 as the base price. Do you have the updated prices?

I take that back. The base price remains the same. The other packages have increased in prices. This is an indication of what packages are selling well because they're not all up by the same price increase. Some are a few hundred, others are close to $500 more. I wonder if there's a USB plug built into some of the price increases.

Fingers are crossed (can't hold my breath that long).

Well, at least the wait has given me a good excuse to read the manual as well as soaking up the information posted in this Forum.

Yup. Enjoy the Engrish in the manual as well as the many lawyer-written statements that are in yellow boxes... like "be careful not to pinch your fingers when closing the cupholders" just to use an example =).

I ordered mine (with Tech package) on September 19, 2009 and was slated for October production month. As of today, still no contact from my dealer.

Ordered in 2002? Wow, it must be on a slow boat from Japan?

Don't know what colour you ordered. Don Valley North Toyota in Toronto has a tech package, gold colour, in their show room last week on the 9th. It may still be there. I'd suggest to check with your dealer about your order status. Usually, once your order is in their production system, you should have the VIN available. Ask your dealer for the VIN. If they can't provide you with the number, then there may be a problem with your order.

do they not stock any Prius at the dealerships in canada? in san diego, there are a few toyota dealerships... and more often than not, i'll bet you can find exactly what you want in their inventory sooner than it would take to special order a car.

that's what i did... and it only had 2 miles on the car.

or do you just want to special order your car? i would think that special ordering doesn't get you a great deal on the price?

    just curious.

Yes, they definitely have stock in Canada. I purchased my tech package last month in the exact colour I wanted. It had just arrived at the dealer the day before, still had the wrapping on it, and had 5 km.
They even negotiated on the price a bit, and gave a much better trade-in value than the other dealers that had wanted me to order and wait.

I picked up the car less than 24 hours after purchasing it after they did the dealer prep. And I'm sure availability will only get better a few months from now as the model gets older - unless you are planning on waiting for the 2011 instead?

I ordered mine (with Tech package) on September 19, 2009 and I just emailed my dealer. The ETA is supposed to be on Dec 5, 2009. The car is now on rail in transit. But with the CN rail strike (which just ended), I am hopeful I can get it before the holidays!

Canadian dealers typically don't stock many Priuses since they're almost always pre-sold (i.e. factory ordered). We only have 5 packages to choose from so ordering one isn't a hassle. The larger dealers will probably have some on the lot (typically 5-8) but the smaller ones may only have 1-2 and they're not silver cause they would've been sold before while in transit lol. Typical factory order is 1-2 months depending on which side of the country you live in. Obviously it's shorter if you live in Vancouver b/c that's where the cars get dropped off.

that sucks. maybe america is different because the foreign competitors have to compete with the domestic auto makers... and stock more options at the dealership. although i really don't consider GM, Chrysler, or Ford competition for Toyota, Honda, or Nissan.

Well as Prius Team said, the American mentality is "I want to walk into the showroom, buy the car and drive it out the same day" so that's why dealers tend to stock 10-20 of each model. It's also why you guys have just large lots.

    Our dealerships are generally smaller.

I am now in my second week of driving my 2010 Prius. It took me 3 weeks of waiting time. You still have a long way before your lease expires. Start your shopping about 3 months prior to the return of your current vehicle. Check with the dealers for their order list to see what they have coming to their show room. I got it from DVNT and they told me the leather seats are installed at Vancouver by Toyota authorized installer. So the car will get off the ship from Japan, have the leather seats installed and then by train to Toronto. If you don't order the leather seats, you should have a very good idea when you can get your car (providing you pick one from the dealer's order list). If one dealer doesn't have your prefer colour and package, go to another dealer and check again. Once you decided which dealer you want to buy from, make sure they put the delivery date in the contract and also the contract condition
if they fail to deliver on time (eg. refund within X day, etc.)
