I had winter steel wheels and tires in my 03 Maxima FWD and the difference was phenomenal. I'd like to do the same with the Prius but would like to spend as little as possible. It seems easier to just have a separate set of snow wheels/tires.

Do you guys recommend some rims or steel wheels for the extra set, also what will be better for fuel economy. I'd probably get 15s even though my touring has 16s.

Also what should I be looking for in terms of steel wheels, for example will scion xb wheels like this eBay Motors: 4-16" SCION XB 08 STEEL WHEELS AND HUB CAPS (item 230251809597 end time May-18-08 13:21:56 PDT) work?

I was just going to start a similar thread so instead I'll just glom on to this one! My dealer is unsure whether the aftermarket steel wheels available for Corolla's will fit a Prius. I don't want to order them unless I am 99% sure they will fit. Does anyone here know? I realize the TP sensors will be missing in the winter but I can live with that. Just want to get a set of steel wheels that will fit and decent hub caps for snow tires. My wife has an 04 Corolla and I might just try to throw her wheels on my Prius and see what happens - but I'm a bit uneasy about doing that.

I also have a touring and a line on some used snow tires that are 15". Are the lug patterns the same for the touring 16" and the standard 15", in other words are they interchangeable? I don't care if it messes up my mileage a little bit.
    thanks

You can be 100% sure. I have a 2005, and had snow tires mounted on 04 Corolla rims, and they fit perfectly. Discount Tire got me the "take off" rims (rims they save from cars that come in and put mags on). $40 each. They recommended, and I agree, that you install different lug nuts (conical seat, they threw them in for free, they were used ones, but with all the salt, who cares). Car runs and drives fine. New wheels make tires stick out a whole 2 mm more. That is about a twelfth of an inch. Inconsequential.
