    I didn't make myself clear ...

Sorry, I meant that it is illegal in the US to tint the windshield 100%. We are also allowed to tint the top 6" of the windshield but I have my windshield tinted from top to bottom, left to right, 100%. This is illegal in the whole US, am I right?

I see, I didn't think about the annual inspection. In Florida, at least in Jacksonville, we don't have any inspections not even emissions.

Folks: place yourself in the position of a law enforcement officer.
Would you like to approach a vehicle for whatever reason ( perhaps to warn the driver that his brake lights were not working or his rear right tire was almost flat ) and have someone pointing a loaded pistol directly at your forehead without you knowing it? I suppose you tint your windows only for the express purpose of deflecting the sunlight... perhaps ,maybe ,because you like to imagine yourself driving a limousines with a VIP in the back seat. :Wth:

Firstly, not all tint has to be so reflective & so dark that one cannot see the inside cabin. You probably have limosine tint in mind and that is so OUT. Secondly, 90% of all SUVs sold in the US already have their rear windows dyed to 30 - 35% visible light transmission at the factory, this already poses danger to police officers in your suggested scenario.

I've had two fix-it tickets on my old car in LA (pain in the nice person.) The first for having 30% on the front windows, the second was lighter, like 20%. Some Cops say they just want to be able to see your face. I guess it depends on their mood.

I'm about to get my new '05 windows tinted and I'm just doing the rear this time...

    Hey all,

Found this thread by searching on 'tint' here on Priuschat. I wanted to resurrect it to ask if anyone who has a picture of their car tinted would post it along with what level of tinting they have. I am looking to tint my new 2005 Prius, and was thinking of just using 35% transmissive on the rear passenger windows and hatch. The main reason is to stop glare/heat/uv from hitting my daughter in the back seat. I'm just a bit concerned about the looks of the car after I do this. New York State will not allow tinting darker than 70% transmissive on the front windows, so I wonder if it will look silly tinted in the back and not the front.

    Let me know...and thanks!

WA state has very strict tint laws that I am told are seldom enforced. Can only have the 6" strip across the top of the windshield, sides and rear. 35% all around. However, I visited my tint shop for an estimate. I am going for the full windshield tint, the lightest available, and 20% on the rest. I saw the windshield tint on a large SUV and really could not tell that it was even there. The limos in town certainly all exceed the tint laws and they are never pulled over. It is a risk I will take to prevent death from heat stroke! This is the highest recommended and busiest shop in town.

Saechaka, I am set up with Accutint. Accutint. I believe the quote was for Lumar. Quote was $369 for all side windows and the rear (not lower rear). Windshield is an additional $150. This tint shop was recommended by someone on priuscat.com. The Bellevue shop is booking one month out right now. I saw their work, looks very good.

I have my front windshield tinted too with the Huper Optik Ceramic. If your car has navigation you do not want to use a metalic film. My installer tried to use VCool on my front windshield but it totally cut the GPS signal. We tested each tint by just draping the windshield on the outside with the tint film. You can put your navigation in a diagnostic mode and see the satellites received and signals. There was no loss of signal by draping the Huper Optik Ceramic over the windshield. If you don't have navigation then you wouldn't have to worry.

Well, I changed my mind thanks to all of you! Just got the tint done today, Llumar 50% non-metallic on windshield and 35% metallic everywhere else. It was a short drive home but with the sun shining directly into the windshield, heat and glare were considerably less than pre-tint. While full windshield tint is not legal in Washington state, you really can't tell it's there because the color is so very light. I figure by being legal on the rest, there would be nothing to draw attention to further inspection (eg, the windshield). The non-metallic windshield tint only has a 3 year warranty, lifetime warranty for all the rest. They say not to clean it with anything containing amonia.
