As soon as I got the car, I added the moonroof, fog lights and tintted windows. The moonroof is done by some 3rd party who is contracted with the dealer. Very good job and only costs $1000. For those who do not have solar roof, this is not a bad idea.

When I had my seats done, the guys were doing a 2010 Prius moon roof - gobs of stuff to take off!

The drawback to that one was it did not have auto-close/open (or maybe it only had one of the two)...

    Thanks.

I believe you have the Webasto SolAire 5300 with soft touch open, soft touch close, plus it closes automatically when the ignition is turned off.

I have the Webasto SolAire 4300 which is the same as yours, except the controls are more rudimentary and it does not close automatically when the ignition is turned off.

    I think they're pretty sweet :)

    Yep, you are right.

By adding a moonroof, the car seems to be much alive and not boring anymore.

also, for those who've researched...what's the life expectancy of these units in regards to weather-proofing? I've heard about various scenarios where the car rusted through at the spots where the moonroof unit meets the cut metal of the roof

There are a few threads on PriusChat about aftermarket sunroofs on the Gen II Prius.

    The best one is craigk's

    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...sunroof-installed-2007-prius-minneapolis.html

which also has the most pictures and a video:

AFAIK, most Prius owners with aftermarket sunroofs get Webasto Hollandia Series or Webasto SolAire Series sunroofs.

I paid the equivalent of $1100 for my Webasto SolAire 4300.

If I had gotten the more fully featured Webasto SolAire 5300 like the one blahblah_gc has, it would have cost me $1200 ... $200 more than what blahblah_gc paid in California.

California seems to have the most, best, and most experienced sunroof installers. They also seem to be cheaper.

Outside of California, Prius owners have a hard time even finding a sunroof installer willing to install one on the Prius' curvey roof.

    * * * * * *

As deltron3030 has noted, be aware of the common view out there that (1) aftermarket sunroofs have issues that factory sunroofs don't have, and (2) because of the Prius' curvey roof, it has even more of these issues.

But personally, after reading and assessing these warnings, I decided to get an aftermarket sunroof anyway.

    Boo,

I live in NJ, next to GW bridge. Can you recommend any installer in my area or in NY?

    Thanks!

I don't think it's easy finding a sunroof installer in the NY area that's willing to install and has experience installing sunroofs on the Prius.

Based on the experience of Bobbyb, I used his sunroof installer on Long Island who had experience installing sunroofs on Priuses -- usually for Toyota dealers on Long Island. Here are the installer's coordinates:

Sun Line Sunroofs (ask for Bud or Jeff)
    112 Bangor Street
    Lindenhurst, NY 11757
    (631) 956-1910

Back in May 2009, if you paid with cash ;) they charged:

    (a) $1195 total for the Webasto SolAire 4300 (has one touch open, and press & hold close)

    (b) $1295 total for the Webasto SolAire 5300 (has one touch open, one touch close, and auto-close when you turn off the ignition)

I did have 2 very minor quibbles with their installation:

    (1) they didn't bend the sunroof's exterior rear trim as much as I would have liked to exactly match the curves of the Prius roof's three little hills (but that was my bad -- I didn't tell them in advance to do it the way I preferred), and

    (2) six weeks after I had the sunroof installed, I noticed that the lights in the sunvisors didn't work (but I've also been too lazy to bring it back to them to fix because I never really use those lights anyway ... that's why I didn't notice this until six weeks later)

If you're interested, then you should check out my and others' posts, photos and comments in craigk's thread:
