Does the Prius come standard with the cargo cover?

I'm looking at buying a used 2006 Prius with package #8 and option package A. It's missing its cargo cover. One used car salesman said that the cargo cover was an option, but my guess is that it would normally be included with a car like this. Am I wrong?

A local dealer quoted me $375 for the cargo cover. Seems a bit steep. Can I get a third-party cargo cover or a Toyota cover at a steep discount?

    It was standard in 2005.
    Don't know about aftermarket options.

They are quite often on Ebay. And yes, one should have been with the car you are looking at.

My 2009 came with the toneau cover. But, it may be possible to build one yourself. If you look at these covers closely, they look a lot like those roll-down (and up) window shades for your house.

The original cover sits in two "wells" on the left and right sides. What if you built a wood or metal frame that would fit into these, and mount a window shade in there?

Yes, this is a "ghetto solution" - but then $375 is a bit high for something like this. (BTW, I used to drive a 1987 Mazda RX-7, and the tonneau cover was an option - and yeah - lots over 100 bucks!

I you want an even cheaper and easier solution to this - you can cover your goodies with a blanket, in the color of your choice....

The 2006 package 8 originally came with the cargo cover.

Come to think of it, I think the highest package for the 06 was package 7, which included leather seats. In either case, the cargo cover would have originally come with the car.

2004 - 2007: Cargo cover (aka and formally called a "tonneau cover") was standard on all Priuses.

2008 - 2009: Cargo cover was standard on all Priuses above the lowest base model. For the 2008 - 2009 model years, Toyota came out with a lower priced, stripped down base model that took out some equipment that used to be standard -- cargo cover, wheel trim rings, heated side mirrors, cruise control, front seat back pockets.

Note: if any of the Priuses you're checking out is missing the cargo cover, then you should check the storage compartment under the cargo area floor. There is a slot there to store the cargo cover for people who didn't or sometimes didn't use it.

    * * * * *
The cargo cover came in two basic colors to match the Gen II's two basic interior colors: light tan (called ivory or bisque) and gray.

Your best bet is usually to search eBay for used ones. You should be able to find one for $100 or less.

When you search eBay, be flexible on search terms. Here are the current search results for the three most applicable search terms:

"Prius cargo cover": prius cargo cover, great deals on eBay Motors, Cargo Nets, Trays Liners on eBay!

"Prius cargo shade": prius cargo shade, great deals on eBay Motors on eBay!

"Prius tonneau cover": prius tonneau cover, great deals on eBay Motors on eBay!

    Wow, thanks so much.

Do you mean that cargo covers could be stored in that plastic "tray" where the tire irons and other tire-changing tools? I just doesn't seem like there's enough space there!

Twenty seconds and a shoe horn, fits right in there. You will see notches (not nachos) for it on each side.

But in any case you mean the black plastic tray that is visible as soon as you fold the floor panel up?

It would have cutouts for the cargo cover on both sides of the tray?

There is, have a look in there, you can see there is a recess on the left side, it goes into the bin on the left side.

Mine stores east to west if the car is sitting north to south. Anyway, if you lift the cover, you will quickly discover if it is in there or not.

I'm still not clear where it goes... I looked again and didn't see a notch. Is there a downloadable manual that indicates this?

A new one would be a different model -- the 2010. Is it identical in the cargo area?

Yes, sorta. The cargo cover will rest above that plastic "tray" and its contents. And you will be able to see the cover as soon as you lift up the cargo floor door because the storage slot is on top, about 8 inches in from the rear hatch opening/rear bumper.

When I say "storage slot", it's a little misleading. There are receptacle indents on top of the left and right walls of that plastic "tray" [I had first said mistakenly that the indents were in the vertical walls of the bins behind each tailight]. The left end of the cargo cover drops into the left side indent and the right end drops into the right side indent, and the cargo cover will be over that plastic "tray" and its contents.

Thanks. So at 8 inches from the bumper, the cover would lay on top of the tire changing tools?

Yep. Here's the 2007 Prius Owner's Manual on pdf. Page 368 has illustrations of the cargo storage tray. If you look closely, you can see the indents on the sides of the storage tray itself [EDIT 1: in my post above I had first said mistakenly that the indents were in the vertical walls of the bins behind each tailight] [EDIT 2: Page 317 has an illustration and instructions for storing the "luggage cover" in the storage box/bin]:

    [IMG] 2007 Prius Owners Manual.pdf

And here is the typed up table of contents:

[IMG] Table of Contents 2007 Prius Owners Manual.doc

I recommend downloading a copy of this 2007 Owner's Manual PDF onto your computer. Almost all of its contents will be applicable to all model years of the Gen II Prius. It's a lot easier to find stuff with the PDF than leafing through the hard copy Owner's Manual with its poor organization, poor indexing and unwieldy size. Just do proper word or phrase searches and you can usually find what you're looking for in seconds or a minute.

Please note that in the 2007 owners manual, this item is referred to as a "luggage cover". (much easier to find if you have this information!)

Good catch! I don't recall ever hearing the term "luggage cover" used before (I'm guessing that its usage may be British). In the 2007 Prius sales brochures they call it a "tonneau cover".

Searching "luggage cover" in the 2007 Owner's Manual PDF I see that on page 317 it has an illustration for stowing the "luggage cover" in the storage box/bin, along with these instructions:

You can stow the luggage cover in the
luggage storage box in the luggage
compartment as shown in the illustration.
At that time, adjust the cover so that
    “TOP” is facing up.

After removing the luggage cover, stow it
in the luggage storage box or place it
    somewhere other than the passenger
    compartment. This will prevent passengers
from being injured in the event of a sudden
    stop or accident.

For the Gen II, it's there on pages 334 & 335 of the destruction manual. :)
