I have run into my first scary issue with my beloved '06 Prius purchased new in March 2006 . The car hasn't seen the dealers service department in over a year thanks to the courage that this site has given me to do my own maintenance and I'm just hoping to keep it that way for a little while longer.

The display is still fine, but the touchscreen won't respond. It happened suddenly. I was at a red light so I decided to start to program the nav for an upcoming business trip but it did not respond. I couldn't hit the accept button on the nav disclaimer. The next time I came to a stop I tried a few other screens and at one point it seemed like the screen needed to be calibrated because I touched one button but a different one above it on the screen registered. I took a deep breath and hoped that somehow it would start working again the next time I used the car. I have not gotten it to respond since.

Is there any way possible that this could be a 12V battery issue? (grasping at straws). I can do most of what I need to do with the steering wheel controls, so my main need for the screen is the GPS. I figure that I can get a portable GPS for cheaper than getting the problem diagnosed.

Most of the MFD's that I have seen on ebay are for cars without the nav and some have been listed as supporting '06 models produced through 10/05. Will I have to take the dash apart to find the exact replacement part number or will I have to purchase the service manuals to get that info.

I assume you have power cycled the MFD and still have a problem. Have you tried cleaning the screen with an LCD safe cleaner? Sometimes oil and dirt buildup can cause erratic touch screen operation.

The car has been powered off and on many times (issue started 4 days ago), but not specifically the MFD. Thinking about disconnecting the 12V battery to see if that resets anything.

The screen is clean. It only had erratic behavior for a brief moment and then no response at all after that.

Trevor, do the buttons work on any screen? If you are disconnecting the 12V test the voltage.

The touchscreen does not work on any screen. It worked flawlessly until the day it stopped working. Unfortunately I have a business trip this week, so I did not have an opportunity to attempt to disconnect the battery or test it.

Sorry to hear your troubles. This is my biggest fear for my 2006. I didn't purchase an extended warranty, so I'm hoping that my MFD doesn't fail.

So after all this time, I finally got brave and ordered an MFD salvaged from a 2008 from ebay. I got it for $300 play $15 shipping. I took the dashboard apart and plugged in the replacement and it worked like a charm.

As I discovered from other threads, the bluetooth module is in the MFD so I lost my phonebook and the bluetooth pairing when I switched. Now that makes me wonder if salvaged MFDs could possibly contain someones phonebook.

I am elated because I can finally use my navigation again after all this time. My wife is happy because she can finally play with the radio stations from the passenger side again.

    Way to go Trevor!

No need to worry: this design/manufacturing flaw was fixed during the 2005 model year.

Actually my car is a 2006 purchased in March of 06. I didn't have any of the symptoms of the 2005 MFD issues. I'm not sure if I happened to get a lemon or if something struck the screen and damaged it without leaving any physical evidence. I'm usually the only driver of my car, but is has been to car washes and driven by parking lot attendants.

The touchscreen (MFD) on my 2006 Prius w/ nav system suddenly stopped working in the middle of a drive. Just before it stopped working, I used the hands free phone function and it responded when I touched the number of the speed dial. Later during the same 40 minute drive (hadn't shut off the car) the touchscreen suddenly wouldn't respond. I tried all of the various pages (Audio/Climate/Map) etc. and none would work. The buttons around the MFD work, and so do the steering wheel controls. This gives me limited functions, but not all. Can't use the nav system at all, because I can't hit the "Agree" button on the warning page. I can't adjust the air conditioning except to have the Auto A/C "on" or "off."

Took it to the dealer today and got the happy news that the entire display is bad and a new one is $7200. Say WHAT?? The dealer says he's attempting to find a reconditioned one, but thinks even that will cost $2200-2300 with installation. I'm still in shock.

I see Trevor's post from back in Dec. 2009 that he successfully bought a used one for $300 on eBay and installed it himself. I'm a lady not ready to tear into my dashboard to try to fix it myself...but I'm open to buying a used one myself and trying to find someone to install it for me. The dealer is telling me that the touchscreen is connected to many other electronics and insinuates I may have more/bigger issues come up if I don't fix it.

Anyone else having issues with the touchscreen? My Prius was purchased new in 2006 and has 81k miles on it. Any help would be appreciated.

The MFD is a known problem area. The going price for a salvage unit seems to be ~$500 plus shipping, at least at eBay:
prius mfd items - Get great deals on Parts Accessories items on eBay Motors!=

I suggest that you buy one from a 2006 - 2009 vehicle that had been equipped with a backup camera (those vehicles had a higher-resolution MFD which is needed for nav, while lower option packages w/o backup camera had a lower-resolution MFD.) To be sure that you are buying the correct unit, you may want to have the original MFD removed so that the part number can be determined.

It will take around 1 hour of labor time to remove and replace the MFD. You are on the right track with the idea to find an independent mechanic (or maybe a car stereo installer) to do the swap for you. Good luck.
