Proud owner of 2010 blizzard pearl, approx 4000 miles on it and getting ready for my first oil change...

Also my first new car so not sure what the deal is with this - if I say go over 5000 miles by just a little bit - say 5400 - will the dealer invalidate the warranty as strictly speaking I'm missing the 5000 mark?

Going to be on holiday at time I'm around 5000 and might go a little over driving home....

Is there a "grace number" of miles usually???

    Thanks!

No grace period. Your Prius will automatically call the Toyota regional office when odometer reaches 5,000 miles. The Toyota computer system will confirm with the Service database to verify your oil change was in fact completed by that milemarker.
If the database does not indicate a confirmative, you will receive a letter from you local Toyota dealer. If your oil is not changed and the database updated within 48 hours, your warranty will be voided. Hopefully your engine will not have much additional wear to the extra mileage on the factory oil.

    kidding.

    hhhmm, "thanks", I think!

What is the real deal, does anyone know? I imagine if I jolly in at 7000 miles there could be an issue but at 5xxx things might be cool???

I don't think anyone really wants to answer that as they are not Toyota (the ones the have to honor the warranty). So best call them/dealer if you want a real answer. If it were me I wouldn't worry about it. I have gone over a few times on my Kia by a few hundred and they had no problem with that when they replaced all the gaskets on the engine!

Car erupts in violent fireball. Seriously, the interval is 10,000 miles in other countries...

Why don't you ask your dealer what they think?

    or alternatively,

Change it a little early. Some people believe in doing the first change early, to get rid of the engine break-in gunk. I did it at 2500, probly more cause it's my new baby :). If history has any say, when it turns into a teenager.. my changes will be more like 10-15k ;-).

Penny, welcome to the forum. I hear your caution and concern but don't sweat it. I can assure you dealers see slight mileage overs all the time.

Your warranty will not be voided.

5k is the "recommended" OCI. That does not mean that you cannot go over or under the recommended OCI.

This forum excluded, I would bet that more people get their oil changed after the recommended OCI than before.

If your issue is purely a warranty one, I wouldn't worry about a few hundred miles one way or the other. When voiding the warranty the burden of proof is on the manufacturer to show that the damage was directly related to the missed service. For example, they can't say the battery failed because you changed the oil at 5001 miles. Given that the type of failure you might experience due to not changing the oil promptly is very rare, I wouldn't sweat a few extra miles.

The second question is why is the number 5000 at all? Why not 4877? Or 5653.4? It's because it's a round number well within accepted tolerances. Just another reason not to sweat the small stuff.

I would change it a little early, there is debris in the initial oil. I doubt it will be any big deal on warenty or otherwise. You can also change the oil anywhere, so do it on your trip if you feel like it. Oil Changers and Jiffy lube will change it faster than your dealer.

Once it hits 5,000 miles, you have to play whack the mole on the the oil maintenance warning light by toggling the button on the steering wheel to make it disappear. At 5,200 miles, the warning light becomes an even more aggressive mole until you succumb and take it in.

No big deal to go over, especially with synthetic oil.

I was 965 miles over for my 10k service and discovered that the warning light doesn't go off after 500 or so miles over. I was on the road, but thanks to Priuschat, I was able to find the procedure to turn it off, so I didn't have to look at it for the rest of the trip.

    thanks for all the answers....

Does anyone know if I HAVE to get the tires rotated at $5k? Sounds a bit early to me, but I don't know...

I need to get the maintenance guide I guess, it did not seem to come with the car from the dealer when I bought it...

For my (approx) 5k check up, It would be much easier for me to just go to a local shop near me that I semi trust, rather than the dealer, which is 15 miles from me and a bit of a zoo in terms of being busy...

If I go to a local shop and just get the oil changed, are toyota going to be on at me re the warranty for not rotating the tires at 5k??

Thanks for the answers, sorry for the basic questions, but its my first new car ever and not that clued up on all this....

If you go to a local shop, they most likely will not have the specified oil so best bring your own. You will need 5 quarts. Be sure to tell the oil change people to put in only 4.5 quarts and return the extra half quart to you. Keep it for the next oil change. Unless you find it elsewhere on sale, Walmart sells Mobil 1 0W-20 for $6.27/qt. There's a manufacturers' rebate once in a while and it goes on sale at places like Advance Auto Parts or Pep Boys every once in a while as well. Be sure to keep your receipts since you will need them in the unlikely event you have a warranty claim on the engine.

Tire rotation is not a required maintenance item but it's smart to do it at least every 10,000 miles.

    Enjoy your new car!

Local shop is fine, just make sure they use a 0w20 oil (or bring your own). Don't worry about the tire rotation every 10k is probably fine. I think changing out the oil a little before 5k makes sense for your 1st oil change. Though your probably past 5k by now anyway. Also 4 quarts is usually enough to fill it even though the owners manual says 4.4 quarts, my experience with changing my own oil is that 4 quarts gets you to just below the fill line which is fine. When you bring 5 quarts to most mechanics they just dump it all in, if you do bring 5 quarts tell them to add 4.25 quarts and youl'll be ok.

My dealer gives free oil changes for life, even with 0W20. So I let them rotate the tires after 5K for $20. It is a small price to pay. In almost 5 months I have 18K miles and tomorrow I have my 4th change (I had an extra one to have them replace the 5W30 they put in with 0W20).

Why are you telling us? Your name was already published on the bulletin re: people with canceled warranties. We all know it by now. (Just kidding).

More seriously, nowadays, the engine are almost never the first thing to wear out. I wouldn't worry.
