Prius uncomfortable to hang upside down from

    Hello all,

I've lurked on this site for some time, but this is my first post.

I thought you'd be interested to see these pictures I took last weekend during my latest trip in the Prius. It was rather eventful.

Its a Black 2009 Prius II...

I'm going to post this in sections since I can't post pictures yet...

My wife and I were on our way from New Orleans to Virginia to visit family for Christmas, and had just passed through Montgomery, AL when this happened.

I had been cruising in the left lane, when a woman in a Chevy Lumina got onto the interstate in the right lane, and then tried to change lanes into me. No signal. I tapped the brakes, hit the horn and steered left onto the small shoulder to avoid her. She kept coming over. I had nowhere to go at that point, except further to the left. It had been raining all morning, and as soon as my left front tire ran out of shoulder and touched the wet grass....it was all over. I lost control and fishtailed across two lanes of traffic, down an enbankment, into a ditch, and then rolled over. Not a multiple roll, just from wheels on the ground to wheels in the air.

My wife and I were both ok. Shaken for sure, but physically ok. We were both wearing our seatbelts, and were hanging upside down by them for a few seconds while we gathered our wits, and made sure we were both ok.

I was very surprised that I really had no control over the situation at all. I don't clearly remember if the VSC kicked in or not. Like I said, it had been raining and everything was wet. Our airbags did not deploy. This could have been due to the way we made impact with the ground, or we may not have been going fast enough to set them off. I estimate that we hit the ditch going about 20-30 mph. Enough to roll the car over.

I thought other PriusChat members would be interested in seeing these, and hearing how well the car protects occupants involved in a violent impact. It protected us SO well that I'm working with the dealer to get a 2010 as a replacement :D

    And now pictures as promised

Its a Black 2009 Prius II...

Here you can see the skidmarks my tires made on the way down the hill. Remember that my car did a complete 180 fishtail on the highway, so in this picture, my car is facing the OPPOSITE way from the way traffic is flowing.

Bummer! Sorry to hear about/see your loss.
Yeah, I don't see much in the way of frontal collision damage so that's probably why the front airbags didn't deploy. Same goes for the doors, so no side airbags.

Did the Lumina driver stop and did she get cited for at least an unsafe lane change?

She did stop. She's the one in the jeans and the black sweatshirt talking to the police officer in some of those shots. She wasn't cited at all, which surprises me, and pisses me off. Is that supposed to mean I can run people off the road whenever I want with no consequences? I doubt it.

    A few things.

First, glad nobody was seriously hurt.

Second, Did you communicate your side of what happened to The Police?

Third, I knew the new 2010 had lot's of plating underneath the car but I didn't realize the 2009 had so much plating.

Definitely glad we walked away from that. Had any little thing been different, the situation could have been drastically worse.

I did give the police my version of the events, and at least one witness gave a statement to police. All the statements (including hers) told the same version of the story...she ran me off the road. But she still wasn't issued a citation. There wasn't any contact between our cars, so the police report classified it as a "single vehicle accident". But it also listed her as the "other driver" and that I was an "unseen vehicle." Trying to decipher the police report was akin to an amputee trying to read braille...but it does clearly state that she was not issued a citation.

I was really surprised by all the plating under there as well. I can only imagine its there to provide either stiffening for the frame, or aerodynamics.

Someone should have turned the vehicle off...the headlights are still on.

Aerodynamics. Btw, you're going to need a new 12V battery, leaving the headlights on like that. :D

    Hi All,

This is the type of accident, when in an SUV, the impact from rolling over results in severe neck injuries. In the Prius it probably maintained side contact from the hood to the rear as she rolled. I am actually supprised at this. The slope off the road must have been just luckily right for the contours of the Prius.

The law says your supposed to do what it takes to avoid an accident. In this circumstance avoiding contact still resulted in an accident. And no citation for the person at fault was another result. Taking it onto yourself to go off on a soft shoulder at speed just so her car would not have any dents is very Christian of you. Of course this is all 20/20 hindsight and not a split second decision. Remember, with traction control, you can still steer effectively under full braking, if your on the roadway. It probably would have been better to do everything you could to stay on the road, even if it resulted in a glancing/scraping collision.

The most important thing about driving is to constantly keep an eye on what your driving on, what you will be driving on, and what you will be driving on if you have to go turn away from your intended path. The only difference between a car stably proceeding along, and a balistic missle reacting only to the circumstances of physics is what the car is driving on.

We learn about this in the winter as a matter of course up here. But leaves on a road, or wet grass growing up out of a clay soil are just as bad.

Glad you're ok after the accident.

Your discription reads as if you were pushed off the road to the left, but the skid marks and the pictures seem to indicate you went off the right shoulder.

Well you were lucky it was not worse, any number of things could have made it that way. Thank goodness you were not injured.

About 5 years ago I was stopped on the highway to make a left turn in my drive way and was rear ended by some idgit doing about 60. My small truck was hit so hard that it drove the drive shaft into the transmission, shortened the truck by about 16 inches, and flipped me over 1 1/2 times.

After the rush was over, it got pretty scary, but the guy that hit got a ticket. I was shocked at that, seems they don't always get what they deserve.

Glad you all are OK, and hope your holiday continues with a bit less excitement.

Yes I agree, having been hit myself by a lady running a red light I was amazed by the number of people who seem to know how to react in a split second and tell you what you could have done to avoid being hit by a speeding car flying through a red light. :bump2:
My guess is no one really means any harm, but what what they fail to understand is there is no time to think about it, you simply do what is natural and when thousands of pounds of metal and plastic come flying at you, you tend to want to get away from it as fast as possible.

Yes that also confused me on first reading. But re-reading I think it was a dual carriageway where he was pushed off the left onto a grass median strip. There he lost control and then went across two lanes of oncoming traffic and then onto the grass embankment shown.

Crossing the two lanes of on-coming traffic unscathed is where the real good fortune occurred IMHO.

Glad you folks are ok, I hope you have a Happy Holidays from here on out.
One thing I would worry about is since she didn't get a ticket your insurance might say it was 50/50 fault and you might have to pay more.

Glad you are OK! The car also seems to have fared well... With no airbags deployed, it should be easily reparable.

I don't want to sound macabre, but those are probably the best gen II underbody photos we have here at Priuschat, showing it whole in a single frame!
