How many remote access keys does a Prius come with?

    Price gouging, of course!

I'd be very surprised if there were any electronics associated with it.

Does the dealer do the laser-cutting on the premises, or do they have to order the key from Toyota? I thought one needed the number from the metal key registration in order to make a key...

Do let us know what you find!

From the discussion with the parts person, it sounded like they ordered the metal key from Toyota. I don't have the little metal tag with the key number but the original owner bought this car as a used demo model from another local dealer so I assume (hope) they have the number recorded. The little metal tag must be with the extra SKS fob somewhere!

I will ask the next dealer about where the laser key is made.

I believe that other PriusChat members have been successful in making keys the "old fashioned" way, by using a current key as a template and having a locksmith cut it...

For a 2006 Prius, it is not a laser cut key. I had one made for my 2008 from an ordinary all metal Toyota blank and ground the keychain end to fit in the fob. The cost was <$5 done at a hardware store where they make duplicate keys. I needed a spare key to go with the "dumb fob" I bought off ebay.

As advised above, shop around for the new smart fob, which will come with an uncut mechanical key. As long as you have an original mechanical key, you can have the uncut key duplicated on to your new blank.

I called another dealer who said there are two types of metal keys for the Prius - one "smooth" key with grooves cut down the middle (the laser cut?, and with a chip), and one conventional key with the typical serrated edges. I have the conventional key. He told me to just bring it to a locksmith for a duplicate.

    Hey DireStraits71,

How did you make out with the reprogramming process for your dumb fob? I just bought one from eBay. Like lots of others, the programming for starting the car was super easy, but I'm still trying to get the lock/unlock to work. I'm done for now because some kid backed into my driver door the day after Christmas but hopefully after it's fixed I'll be back at it. Any tips beyond what is in the instructions here on PriusChat?

The smart key should have it on the side of the remote, at least that is where they are on the 2010 model

Since I was only going to use the dumb fob for a spare, I didn't even try to program the buttons. I don't think its possible any how, and I bought a non smart key fob, so that function wouldn't work either even if you could program it.

I bought my car new, so I had two smart keys and their mechanical keys. What I wanted was a spare key/fob to carry with me when I travel, so the dumb fob and the mechanical key I had duplicated works for that function. When I travel I take my one smartkey fob and the dumb fob plus duplicated key as my spare. My other factory provided smartkey and its mechanical key are safely at home. I didn't want to be in a position where I could lose both smartkey fobs while away from home.

    I've been following this thread:
    http://priuschat.com/forums/knowled...lly-how-program-non-sks-key-fob-detailed.html
and it seems that you can program your dumb fob to unlock/lock your doors. It does sound like a difficult process. I tried it about six times then gave up as it was late at night and I thought my neighbors would be wondering about all the door opening/closing!

I'm with you - I don't want to be anywhere without a spare and with the e-keys a new strategy is required. Eventually I'll want two Smartkeys (since it sounds really ugly if you lose your only one and can't replicate), at least one dumb fob, and a wallet metal key (as well as the little metal keys in the fobs). If I can't get the dumb fob to unlock/lock then I'm fine with it as a starter with the metal key to open the door (as you are doing).

Right now I only have one SmartKey with a little metal key backup, and I'm nervous!
