I had my oil/filter changed at local dealer. Then roughly 4500 miles later i get a white warning light on dashboard (maintenance needed). This did not come up the first 5000 miles. The person at dealership said there was no way they could stop the warning light from coming on. Now while i do not mind letting them change my oil/filter every so often, i also like to do it myself. Any way my question is, Is there a way to stop this warning light (without using dealership) or am i stuck with it?? thanks

The light is programmed to come on every 5,000 or so. John is an acknowledged Prius expert, but the links he provided give thumbnails, rather than radable text...worth it if you want to keep a good copy. The light should have lit up around the first 5k. There is a sequence of keystrokes/button pushes that will turn it off; I don't have the manual handy, but it's in there. My preference for erasing pesky lights I don't want or need to see is to paint over them with black touchup paint.

The car's maintenance intervals, as recommended by Toyota, are 5000 miles. The light simply serves as a reminder for each interval, activating 5000 miles after the last reset. It's not like it's programmed to somehow actually recognize any specific maintenance needs. Oil and and filter changes are recommended for each interval so to that extent the light serves as a reminder for an oil and filter change. But more may be required depending on the interval. For that, you need to consult the maintenance schedule in your manual.

I hate to be contradictory, however the light reset procedure "works" even when the light is extinguished - you're simply resetting the 5000 mile counter back to zero.

The sequence to reset the Maint Req light is different on different Prius models. Mine is 2007, it is on page 131 of the Owner's Manual in the section under "Instruments and Controls" then to 'warning lights'.
    I quote:

    1. Press the "POWER" switch to the "OFF" mode with the odometer reading shown. 2. Press the "POWER" switch twice to select the "IG-ON" mode while holding down the trip meter reset button.
Hold down the button for at least 5 seconds. The odometer reading indicates "000000" and the light goes off.

    end quote.

Therefore, to clarify the methods in several threads, for this model year 2007:
The ODO reading must be showing in the dash (Not Trip A or B) before you turn your power off. Then, when you turn it back on, you need to hold down the ODO (reset) button (Not the KM/Mph button) until the reading in the dashboard goes to, in my car ----- sequentially till the Maint Req'd light goes off. Then you're done.
