I hate to admit it, but after reading dozens of posts, I am utterly confused about the iPod options because other posters have either iPhones or different Prius versions.

I have an old iPod (Gen III) that I would like to integrate with my 2010 Prius II. I do not have the Nav system. Currently, I'm running it through the aux port in the center console, but would prefer to use the cable that will (presumably) display title, artist and other info on the display and will allow control via the steering wheel.

Is this possible with the standard Toyota $299 cable? And is that the best way to go? What can I expect in terms of installation complexity?

    Thanks in advance.

I will answer if you still have doubts.

I have a Prius II as wel with regular headunit. You can buy the recommended Toyota part (as seen in PC store). You could look at other less expensive ipod-car kits but make sure they explicitly support the 2010 Prius as I tried the ipod-kit sold in the PC store for a 2008 Prius on my 2010 and it didn't work.

Okay, now, I love my kit! I've done ipod-car kits for some time now in my and family cars and aux is nothing once you integrate it. You will charge your ipod when connected. You can either browse through the songs manually from the ipod or from the stereo, but not both can be enabled at the same time (this is with the Toyota part). I have an old iPod mini and works great. I've used iPhones, iTouches, iPods, and the all work just fine.

It can display either title, artist, track number during a song. You have to click the Text button to switch between those screens. You can use the 1-6 buttons to either sort the songs by Playlist, Artist, Album, Podcast, All Random, or something like that.

If you think my ipod mini is ancient, you won't if I tell you I upgraded to a 32GB flash drive ;-)

I just got the Kensington Liquid Aux which is perfect for the Prius. It is a combo charger/miniplug adapter that you can plug into your center console. I run the iPod with one cable attached out from the center console and it charges while playing. I personally think that no headunit can replace the ease and speed of the iPod so why not embrace it and use the thing to control your music. If you get an iPhone or Touch there are programs that will allow you to swipe the screen with a finger to advance the music so you don't have to take your eyes off the road.

I know what you mean. I find it hard to find songs sometimes. I used to have a car with navi that was so easy to search for songs, but our non-nav is a pain. I literally have to sort by artist, then find the artist in A-B order, then find the song. However, it is out of sight and a very clean setup. I have so many songs, I just play it on random and go on with my day. If I like some songs alot, I add them to a playlist and play off that playlist if I want only those songs.

I've done the cassette-adapter / 12v socket power adapter thing before and it was so messy and a hassle to connect/disconnect.
