iPod in 2002 G1 Prius!! IT WORKS!

Hi everyone, just wanted to share with you my experience installing the USA Spec unit (got it from Toyota Dealer) in my 2002 Prius. This is amazing, it shows up on the nav display with text and everything, audio sounds amazing, I can control it through the nav display and buttons on the dash and I can even listen to movies on my iPod too! Also with the RCA jacks, I will now be able to install an aftermarket deck so I can listen to MP3 CD's, DVD audio and bluetooth from my Alpine deck. Oh my goodness I can't wait, but here are the pics to show you all how it looks. My Prius is insane, I have the Gen 4 navigation, microphone kit for the navigation system, this iPod kit, I am maxxing this prius to the limits! HAHAHA!! Let me know what you all think! Its cheap too, its only $140!!!

yes there is an AUX input as part of the unit too! I use it for my other MP3 player as well. You simply have to select DISC 5 on the display, then press play on your MP3 player. Audio Quality is fantastic too! It cost me $100, and it was well worth the upgrade. I even attach my phone to the Aux input as well, making like a makeshift handsfree unit too. Great thing about it, is when it senses audio coming through the AUX, the iPod stops playing, so in effect, its like a bluetooth unit. When the Aux stops transmitting sound, the iPod resumes music. Simply awesome, and better than anything the Gen2 or Gen3 Prius' have! HAHAHA!!!

 

Hello from Canada!!! Yes indeed your iPhone 3g should work on your Prius, if you want instructions here they are. Now, Toyota has some of the worst compatibility with bluetooth phones of any car maker. So it may take a few tries at this.

As for the navigation in Greece, well the map for Western Europe will cover you. Go to this website, and you will find exactly which disk you need.

Hi there! Thanks for that! At any rate, if you already have nav installed, its just plug and play. Rather unplug the old, and plug in the new! If you don't I do have an extra harness I can sell to you, and using the instructions I posted a long time ago, you can put it in your car. The nav unit and GPS antenna are all you need extra. PM me if you want to go ahead.

The changer buttons you see are Playlist buttons. So you just organize the Playlist as TOYOTA1-ROCK, TOYOTA2-FOLK, TOYOTA3-DANCE, and then you simply press the corresponding CD Changer buttons so CD1 would access the playlist TOYOTA1-ROCK and so on. Its a very cool setup. So to answer your question, no you do not need a CD changer or anything else. The little control unit it comes with activates the CD Changer mode on the display, and it only does that so you can access songs via Playlist.

You can select CD Changer but I like MD Changer because Song Titles display on the screen which is what I like. However, if you turn off the song title display, you can listen (not watch) to movies on your iPod Touch as well. Just watch on the iPod screen.

As for the kit itself, you can also buy it as a USA-SPEC kit. Just type that into google, and its the TOY-20 kit. Or look it up on Craigslist or Kijiji, you might find somebody selling it for much cheaper!

Oh and I am using a 1st Gen iPod Touch. The manual states its totally compatible with any generation. Plus you can do what I did and nix the CD Player (I call it my record player because it skips all the time, despite many cleanings), and just pick up off the Y-harness that goes to the CD Player and use that instead of removing the dash to get to the back of the radio. This way the kit took about 5 minutes to install and worked right away.

I will call Toyota and see how much they are charging for it for you! : )
