I predict a sizable trembler for Cali over New Years.

He's not to far from the truth... 6.5 Magnitude in Northern CA today. Near Eureka I believe? Many shops windows broken out, someone stated a Refrigerator moved 4 feet, and lot's of damage to dishes etc...

I just saw it in the news....

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California Saturday afternoon, shaking buildings south of the Oregon border and knocking out power in several coastal communities.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at about 4:27 p.m. about 27 miles from Eureka, a city of about 26,000.

9 days to have gotten out of Dodge after putting away all the expensive china. Not too shabby in my book...

Well, so much for what the seals that left SF know. They headed to Oregon, right near this earthquake.:D

After looking at some of the data...

I don't think this is the one.

    It wasn't big enough.

Does that mean it will be postponed, or it (the next big one on the northern faults) was reduced.

    I am not convinced...

The +7 on those faults hasn't occurred yet...

    I believe it will.

There is evidence I am not a fool believing in hocus pocus...

I think the last shaker wasn't the one one due... even though it hit when I said it might.

There is some more time left, on the grand scale... I hope I'm wrong... but... I ain't taking the measurements... I'm just looking at them.

hmm...the last two moderately sized quakes were in Baja Mexico, and now in Eureka, California...maybe that was just the ends making way for the bigger middle to move??? What's mid-way between the two???

I'm thinking the Rodgers/Maacama fault systems are the ones that are going to release... the reason is the changes in the region specifically... and the lack of creep that would show through the surface... a lot of tension is there that is not able to slide along like some of the other faults show on the surface.

I have two friends that argue it's the Hayward fault that will go before the northern ones do.

But then again, I have another one that says Cali will slide off into the sea... :D

New moon is just around the corner folks...

The more little quakes, the better. In theory, that lessens the chance of a big one. Of course, it could also mean increased seismic activity...can you show us a recent map?

So far in this thread, there are some links that you can use to navigate to the various places to get the data sets... you'll have to "overlay" the information you want to collect to get what you are asking for.

    There is no one map.

What there are however are several noted institutions and individuals taking the data from their sources (and sometimes including unconfirmed information from other sources) and giving an opinion about what they believe are important trends.

Geology and predicting what is going to occur isn't a well enough defined science to nail things down to a decade, much less a smaller window of time for any specific area...

I am trying to understand it myself, and have been to some places just to see the evidence in the geologic record... which helped tremendously when I took my kids fossil hunting on many trips...

One of my interests in living... one of many actually.

There's still the New Moon... :D although, it will be at apogee...

I predict a sizable trembler is possible for other date windows.

Hmmmmm... let's see what these dates bring.

    Jan 30, 2010

    Feb 27, 2010

Although if I was to stick to just this criteria I would have to include:

Aug 10, 2010... significant influence globally

Sept 8, 2010... significant influence globally

Oh... and how's about a long shot while I'm at it then too...

Jan 21, 2023... WOW... it could happen

Each date is centered on a 3 day window of higher probability... using one criteria as the indicator/modifier.

And no... this is not me using the shotgun method of forecasting...
    :D

The way I heard it North Hollywood is heading for Haight-Ashbury. The only thing holding it back is the Stanford Linear Accelerator - hope it's strong enough!

I remember when I was in 4th grade (1996), a geologist came to our classroom and said there would be a HUGE earthquake here in the bay area between then and 2000. He scared the **** out of me. But it never came.

Then I remember when I was in 7th grade (1999), everybody was talking about Y2K. It scared the **** out of me. People withdrew their money from the banks and stocked up on food and water. What did I do? I unplugged my N64. But nothing happened.

Nothing happened with Y2K because a bunch of COBOL programmers worked very hard to make sure nothing would happen! Y2K was predictable and fixable! Unfortunately, we aren't able to do anything about earthquakes, as yet.... (Will we? Someday?)

I'm still a believer that the northern Cali fault system will let go soon...

Don't worry, whatever energy it doesn't spend soon will just build up and make it bigger when it does go...:scared:

We need Python programmers for earthquakes. ;)
