I paid MSRP for mine, but the dealer had a 6,000 markup! After a day
and a half of bargaining I got my way. Screw you Carson Toyota!

Most of Canada has "Access Toyota" which is basically a Saturn-like, no haggle pricing.

[font=Comic Sans MS:7b4fd3e40c]It depends in large part on your location. Here in the Northwest, Prii are fairly easy to come by. I looked around to find the option package I wanted, but then just drove to Vancouver Toyota in Vancouver WA where Matt Dale helped me swap my Camry XLE for a Silver Cloud BC which I drove home that night. (plug for Matt and Vancouver Toyota intentional)

I got my Silver cloud for MSRP-$100. Thomason Toyota wanted MSRP+$1500 and would not negotiate. (slam to Thomason intentional)

Some parts of the East have low allocation, though it seems to be improving all over the US now.

Putting your location in your profile is helpful if you want tailored advice.[/font:7b4fd3e40c]

If you look hard enough, no matter how limited Prius inventories are in your area, you'll be able to find a dealer willing to sell at MSRP or below. The dealer I used here in the NE has a policy of not selling above MSRP. The Prius is truly worth the price.

I am in the Boston area. I called every dealer in MA, evry dealer in NH and every dealer in RI. Not everyone wuld quote me over the phone, but the ones who did were all over the place with pricing. Anyone know a reputable dealer in MA or around?

The dealer here in downtown Spokane said MSRP + 2000 to 3000 over the phone. Since it is a for a company car, I asked what he could so if I brought a cashiers check and pre-paid for the one I wanted-which he would then order. He said then he could do MSRP + 1000. And that was from the "good" Spokane dealer.

I called Tonkin in Portland (I can fly there for $34 on Southwest :) ) and they said they could do MSRP.

I still need to talk to my company accountant, but for $1000 I'll fly to Portland and drive back. For spite if nothing else.

I like the sound of offering MSRP - 2000 as "jandmayra" calculates, maybe once I get my ducks in a row I'll try that :):

I bought my package 6 off the dealer lot at Walnut Creek, in the San Francisco Bay Area. The car had 20 miles on it and had obviously been out on a couple of demo runs. I test drove it, then offered MSRP - $250. Got the 'talk to my manager' runaround and eventually settled on MSRP - $150. The whole process was quite pleasant and I would recommend Walnut Creek Toyota. Of course, the car included GBS, floor mats and the rear bumper applique, so I the $150 savings didn't count for much...

I paid MSRP for a Super White package #6 (plus mats, cargo net, rear bumper applique) that I picked up on Friday. The dealer didn't have any on the lot when I checked with them a week or two ago, but they were expecting this one, and luckily it was just what I wanted. I got very little for my '95 Camry trade-in, but I figure I drove that car long enough to get my money's worth out of it.

A "holdback fee" is money the manufacturer gives the dealer when they sell the vehicle. It is added to the price of the vehicle when they "buy" the car.

Think of it like a deposit you might pay on a soft drink. When you purchase the drink, you pay a extra $0.5, or so. Then when you return the container, you get the nickel back.

Now, some dealers will charge you the holdback fee claiming it as part of their cost in purchasing the vehicle. However, what they are really doing is double-charging since they will get that money back from the manufacturer as well!

    Hope this answers your question.

$500. It had 150,000 miles on it, was repainted (the paint was okay but not fabulous), and needed a bit of typical maintenance that I didn't want to do since I was selling it. I probably could have gotten $1000 for it if I sold it myself, but I didn't feel it would be worth the hassle. If I weren't buying a Prius or some other hard-to-get car, I might have tried to bargain with them. I expressed my disappointment but they weren't interested in budging.

Interestingly enough, the day I put a deposit down on my Prius, another local dealer called me to say they had a Tideland Pearl in with package #6. They wanted to know if there was anything they could do to convince me to buy theirs instead of from the other dealer. I didn't want that color, so I said no thank you. I was surprised that they sounded willing to deal a little. Maybe I could have gotten more for my trade-in.

If it's in good shape, you might be able to get something reasonable for it. Have you tried pricing it at edmunds.com?

As far as donating - I considered this, but the federal laws this year make it so that if you want to claim more than $500, you can't just claim "blue book" value. You have to wait until the charity sells it, and then you get to claim the sale price. I'm not sure what happens if the charity doesn't sell your vehicle.

The amount of money this will save you in taxes depends on many variables. But if I could only claim $500, I wouldn't recover that in tax savings. Even if I could claim $1000, I doubt it would be worthwhile.

Took the wife & kids to Downtown Toyota (Spokane, WA) today. I wanted the wife to drive the Prius, but she wouldn't :( (I'd already taken one test drive, I wanted her to drive it too.)

Anyway, the salesperson was pretty knowledgeable and of course it was a nice ride. For me at least--the wife was in the back between two child seats :)

The sticker had a 3K "Regional Market Adjustment" or some such on it. Although we did not get down to hard bargaining, I got the idea that they might come down some.

    We shall see, I guess.

I just priced my Corolla at edmunds.com and it said that my trade-in value is $390.
Did you do it for your Camry? What was the difference between that and the dealer's offer?

If I chose "average" condition, around $1000. If I chose "rough", $640.
