Did you try your other key? Need to rule that out first before you get worried. :)

I would not think lightning would be a problem unless it was maybe 1/8 of a mile. Don't park under the 10280v power line that cross some parking lots near malls and powewr plants. Take a flourescent bulb and hold it out and see it light up.

The battery in my key completely failed today (2010 Prius, purchased July 1 2009). About two weeks ago i got a warning from the MID, then i noticed that the red alarm button was stuck down on the key. When i drive, the key is near my cell phone(which is always turned off) and my Palm Tungsten E PDA(also turned off). Fortunately i used the key to get in and held the key up to the Power Button to start the car.

So so so sorry!!!!!!! I didn't realize I hadn't posted my result.

The second key works fine and now the first one does too! I'm not sure what the problem was... maybe it was the compartment I had it in within my purse?

Thanks for your help with problem solving!
