    I'm not asking for a car that doesn't exist, like your hybrid-camaro example. They sell the car I want right across the state line. I'd prefer to buy locally but the folks around here have decided to squeeze the locals for an extra $1500.

    We're finally picking up a IV (w/o NAV) on Saturday. My wife wanted a red IV with the dark gray leather. We finally got the exact combination we wanted and will drive to OH to take delivery on Saturday morning. She's thrilled to get exactly what she wanted and I'm thrilled that I got $1k off MSRP & that the search is over.

    Congrats, 2nd Gear ... you beat me my a mile ... in fact, you beat me by over a half decade getting exactly what you want. I've been waiting for a factory EV, or PHEV since 2004.

    Pompous, or is that pompa$$ dealerships. I would love to see auto manufacturers provide a brick and mortar store for test drives and repairs, but for purchasing, that could be done online with all options available carte blanche. If I want solar/moon roof, 17" wheels, no nav but w/ JBL sound in Sandy Beach w/Dark Gray leather (a color combo not offered, at least in my region) and am willing to pay MSRP and to wait 8-10 weeks to get it, why shouldn't I have have that option?
    I'm not asking for something Toyota isn't already making, like a Summer Green color or 6 way electric adjustable seats, just the ability to order and wait for the order to be custom filled to MY specific preferances.
    Is that really asking to much?
    TOYOTA, ARE YOU LISTENING???

    They did listen. That was/is Scion. Scions are an experiment to see if American's will buy auto's like they buy shirts from LL Bean. Mixed results.

    It's an intriguing idea but most buyers don't want to buy autos from a catalogue. The want to discuss and negotiate. Some cultures and ethnic groups won't buy unless they can negotiate.

    However to make this work you get only the options that the manufacturer wants to provide. In LLBean's catalogue there are two or three styles of dress shirts and maybe 6 to 8 colors. That's it. That's also Scion.

    IMO, no, it's not too much to ask. Buy a Tesla. You order (and pay for) it and they build it.

    If you don't mind paying $5k more (just pulling a random number out of the hat but you get the idea).

    A la carte is a lot more expensive to build than packages. It also decreases the resale value since they are a billion configurations out there and thus finding a used car buyer will be more difficult. It's also more difficult for a used car buyer to figure out what's in the car (one reason why I'll avoid buying used German cars. People are lazy that they don't list every option included yet expects us to pay a particular price).
