When I took delivery of my classic white 2K1, there was a mix-up and the one I have came without cruise control. I understand it wasn't availavle when I ordered it, but became available shortly thereafter.

Anyway - I've been thinking about getting an aftermarket versioninstalled and wondered if anyone has experience with various brands or versions.

How about the genuine factory article. Metro lists it for $151. Installation involves replacing the steering wheel and brake light switch, but when done, you have the exact same setup as used in '02-'03. They have a good rep and are a sponsor. Factory Toyota Cruise Control Kit

Cool - is this something an owner could install without professional help or specialized tools?

And - does it work well? I make quite a few 4+ hour trips and cruise would sure be easier on my knee.

Work well? You may not be aware that your Prius, with it's throttle by wire technology has what's needed for cruise. That even includes the cruse indicator on the dash (near the speedo). All you're missing is the set/accel/cancel switch and an appropriate stoplight switch (for cancelling).

Install it yourself? You might want to look at oooolllldddd postings on the Yahoo group. I believe you'll need a steering wheel puller and, if I recall correctly, the stopswitch nut is a bit cumbersome, and of course excercise due caution with the airbag. People were, however, installing them theirselves with good results.

    Good luck!

My 2K3 also did not come with CC. Anyway, it is not that difficult to add it yourself since all the circuitries and controllers are there, just a couple of switches and resistors are needed.

Basically, there are 2 differences for Prius with CC:

    1) Steering Wheel with CC paddle
    2) Brake Light Switch with 4 prong instead of 2

There are a few methods circulating in the Internet:

Cruise control - Summary of current options.

    Method #1:
    The Toyota installation.

    Method #2:
    The "Alex Karahalios" method.

    Method #3:
    Remote Control Cruise Control

    Method #4:
The "Mark, John, & Kelly" method.

    Method #5:
    The "Locutus of Borg" method.

Mine is quite similar to method #5 but I did not change the Brake Light Switch. I added a relay in it's place.

I bought the OEM parts for about $150 from Metro Toyota in Jan 02, and I think that price is still current. The links already posted will answer most all questions, but I have 3 more comments.

    1. Definitely disconnect both batteries and wait a bit for the capacitors to discharge. We are taking no chances while handling the airbag module.

    2. I used a real "puller" on the steering wheel, but some others have had success hammering on the back side of it.

    3. Getting that brake switch adjusting nut off is much easier if you cut into the welds first with an abrasive wheel on a dremel (etc) mototool. This is also an "eye protection" moment.

Lastly, this is a *very* helpful modification.

Well, that's a darn good question. I didn't check before I posted that as I knew they made the original. I don't see it either. It may be worth a call/e-mail to Dave & Kelley to see if they still sell it or could make one for you.

    Sorry to mislead ya there.
